Any sense of self-preservation I had died at the accident. All I feel is mounting frustration that I wasn’t in the car to help.

“Look,” I start, letting annoyance bleed into my voice. “I never asked for your help. I don’t know what you want from me, and at this point, I don’t care. So just leave me alone.”

There. It’s said. No more running from my fate. If I’m going to die today, I’m facing it head-on.

The ghost looks stricken. She wrings her hands together as if stuck in indecision.

My frustration mounts further. “Just go.” I snap.

Ghost girl hesitates a second longer, anxiously looking over her shoulder before disappearing.

At that moment, a car comes tearing around a bend, headed towards the school. I expect it to slow down now that it’s on the school drive. It doesn’t. And it’s headed directly towards me.

I scramble backwards, and the car screeches to a stop directly in front of me. My legs are shaking from the scare, but I manage to stand up and take a better look at who’s driving like a maniac.

I’m in trouble.

The passengers spill out. They’re all wearing dark hoodies with the hoods pulled up. The hoodies wouldn’t be so concerning if it weren’t for the Halloween masks. I can’t see anyone’s face.

One of the figures starts towards me.

Oh fuck no.

I turn to run in the opposite direction.

I’m not fast enough. I make it about two steps before I’m grabbed around my middle. The person picks me up off the ground, and I start screaming and kicking to no avail. The grip on me only tightens.

Still, I’m not giving up.

I keep screaming, desperately hoping to see someone walking down the road. No one is around to hear me.

I keep kicking out, trying to hit a second masked person, who is now approaching with duct tape. They disregard my struggles as they grab my legs, taping them together at my ankles. Together now, they carry me towards the trunk of the car – the open trunk, where another masked person waits to lock me in.

Oh god, no.

My claustrophobia flares to life, and true panic settles over me. I start screaming like a mad woman, utterly blind to everything except not going in that trunk. I flail, trying to escape, but still, I can’t get free.

Someone around the front of the car yells, “Shut her up already.”

There are more footsteps. Someone with a gorilla mask is standing over me now. The Gorilla person lifts a hand before something hard strikes me above the temple. Blissfully, everything goes black.

---

When I wake up, I can’t see a thing. Everything is dark, and my head is throbbing.

I try to reach up to touch the spot where I was hit. No luck. My wrists are behind my back, tied together around something rough, maybe a tree?

I flex my legs only to find they aren’t tied to the tree but are still duct-taped together. I point my toes but can’t feel the ground.

Well, shit, this is really bad.

I want to scream, but there’s a big cloth ball inside of my mouth – a gag.

I move my head around, trying to find some kind of light. There’s some fabric brushing up against my nose and scraping over my hair. There’s a bag over my head.

Did the masked people just tie me up in the middle of nowhere and leave me to be eaten by vultures? I feel like I at least deserve an evil mastermind speech.

A girl wants some closure.
