But Em isn’t finished driving home her threat.
“I wonder if they still use those vests that don’t let you move your arms.”
I stop struggling, fear paralysis taking over once again.
“So, you won’t tattle if you manage to break out of here, will you, Vivian?” Em all but purrs.
Apparently, revenge is her thing. Who knew?
I manage to shake my head.
If I play along, they probably won’t outright kill me.
Probably.
“Good,” Em responds. I can hear her backing away.
“Now be a good sport and take your punishment. It’s not even close to what you deserve, but it will have to do.”
A male voice in front of me asks, “You want to start?”
Em answers. “Yeah, let’s get this done. I don’t want to be around her a minute longer than I have to.”
There is more faint rustling, and then I feel a sharp pain in my leg. I try to scream, but the gag is holding.
Holy crap, that hurt.
What the hell was that? Did they just cut me?
There’s another sharp pain now, only this one hitting my shoulder, and then again at a spot where the tree doesn’t cover my back. Again and again, I’m hit with something hard.
Rocks, I realize with dismay.
They are throwing rocks at me, and not small gravel from the feel of it. These are decent-sized rocks, and they hurt like hell.
I can feel my blood starting to ooze down my arms – sharp rocks.
Over and over, the rocks hit me.
I thrash against the tree, trying to get away from the pain. Still, the ropes hold, and the rocks keep coming.
I try to protect my eyes by tucking my chin into my neck.
Bad idea.
My attempts at self-preservation only draw attention to my head. I get hit in the head a few more times before, and for the second time that day, I black out.
Chapter 4
HOLY CRAP, I HURT. EVERYWHERE.
I try not to move as I regain consciousness. I’m not sure how long I’ve been out.
A few minutes? A few hours?
Em and the others might still be close by. Maybe if they think I’m still out cold, they’ll leave me alone.
I don’t hear any shuffling or snickering.
