I can’t feel any panic now. All I feel is the burning need to follow the lights.

Again, a small part of me wonders what the hell it is about this bond that makes me feel calm in risking my life for it.

Thunder cracks above me. Despite the cold, my brain is working well enough to remember that thunderstorms and water don’t go so well for humans caught in the middle. I’m low on time.

Taking multiple shallow, fast breaths to prepare for the deep dive, I finally take one deep breath and dive down.

I swim deeper into the water, and the pulling on my wrist quickly becomes as strong as a few days ago. The deeper I get, the stronger the tug.

Well, at least there’s no chance I’ll get lost.

My eyes are open, and I can see the blue wispy lights leading down further than I can see. I keep pressing on, swimming faster, trying to get down to the Destroyer before I run out of air.

I’m not sure how deep I am or how long I can hold my breath. When I start to feel lightheaded, I pause from swimming, my physical instincts telling me I need to turn around.

I fight it and continue swimming further down.

Time, I’m running out of time.

As if the bond can sense my body is struggling, the lights extending from my hand become taut, and I’m pulled down deeper.

My body is going into shock now.

My lungs feel like they are burning with the need to breathe, and my vision is darkening.

I’m not far off from drowning. Soon, I know I’ll breathe in lungs full of water – because anything is better than the spasms that are starting to rack my body.

The edges of my vision are darkening, and I’m about to black out.

That’s when I see the large sphere of blue light in front of me. Inside is a person – eyes closed, asleep and frozen in time.

I reach out for the light in a desperate attempt as water finally floods my lungs.

Just as my finger touches the light, the person in the sphere opens their eyes, locking them onto mine.

And then, I drown.

Chapter 13

IWAKE UP, COUGHING UP LUNGS FULL OF WATER, SPRAWLED OUTin the sand. My lungs feel like they are on fire, and I think I’ve been transformed into a popsicle.

Oh, and to top it off, someone has their hands on me.

I shake my head and try to get rid of the small black dots still swimming in my vision. It isn’t working, but I sit up anyway, effectively shrugging off whoever was touching me.

Holy smokes, my chest hurts. I sway in my more upright position. The dots in my vision are finally starting to clear.

“You should let me finish getting the water out of your lungs.” A voice calls from behind me.

A man’s voice. I turn to find the person I saw in the blue orb now crouching behind me. He’s looking down atme with concern.

My heart skips a beat. He looks to be in his late twenties, and his hair reaches almost shoulder length, though I can’t tell what colour it is from the rain that is still pouring down on us. His eyes are his most striking feature, shining an eerie blue. Even half-drowned, I can appreciate his appeal.

It’s amazing the things you notice when you aren’t fully drowned.

He must have been giving me CPR.

I shake my head, more than okay with coughing out the rest of the water myself if it means not having the stranger pushing down on my chest again.
