“Why did you come here?” Lucas asks. I turn to see our friends step inside.

“Not for the reasons you think. I am after her brother. He stole my money, and I want it back.”

“Why is my mate bruised and bloody?” Lucas growls, his teeth showing.

“I’ll give you one shot,” Heath says.

“What?” Lucas tilts his head.

“So we can talk calmly; I’ll give you one hit to anywhere on my body. I won’t retaliate.”

“You are giving me permission,” Lucas scoffs.

“I am.” He lifts his eyebrows.

Logan lifts me carefully from the chair, sitting down and holding me in his lap. I don’t take my eyes off Lucas, even when I feel Las stand behind us. I’m mad that I didn’t see him shift back.

Lucas looks over his shoulder quickly. When he looks back at Heath, his fist flies through the air and lands on Heath’s face, knocking him back two steps.

“Are you sure I only get one?” Lucas braces himself.

“I knew there was a reason you won so many fights.” Health spits blood on the floor. He straightens. “If you take another, I will fight back, remember.”

“I don’t give a fuck what you are or who stole money from you,” Lucas says. He takes a step, eliminating the space Heath created. “When you involve our mate and put her in danger, we have a problem. You should be glad that we listened to her and didn’t kill you all.”

I glance at the shifters, and vampires that are forming a circle around the chairs. My attention is caught on the expression on Bishop and Laken’s faces. There is a hint of interest and confusion.

What the fuck is this guy?

“You think it would be that easy?” Heath asks silkily.

“You don’t have a mate, do you?” Las asks.

Heath looks over my shoulder. “No,” he responds quietly.

“We would fight to the death to protect and defend her. It doesn’t matter how big or small you are when you are fighting for something important and loved. Do not underestimate us. You really think highly of yourself if you think you could survive the three of us and our powerful friends.” I look up at Las, and he brushes his hand down my hair, his eyes bright with anger.

I have to suck back the tears. I have to move this along. I would like to go home to cry.

“Very true,” Heath mumbles and looks at me.

“Look at me,” Lucas demands. “Don’t look at her.”

Heath sighs. “I concede your point. I would never survive in human form if you all attacked.” He licks the blood dripping over his lip from the cut on his eye. “Can we call a tentative truce?”

“Yes,” I blurt, and all eyes bore into my head. “I want to go home. He didn’t touch me. Kill the man being restrained—he’s the one that did. What the fuck do you want me to do about your money?” I ask Heath.

“I would be grateful if you waited here until your brother comes and convinced him to give it back,” he answers.

I study his face. He isn’t lying. I think he honestly didn’t want to hurt me or take me away from my mates. He really doesn’t care about losing Lucas. All he wants is his money back.

“It must be a lonely life,” I tell him softly.

“What?” He rocks back.

“To only care about the money. Did you allow a woman shifter to be killed in the fight?” I ask. His jaw clenches. “My answer is no. I don’t want to see my brother.”
