Breeane

“Iwant to go home, Handsome.” Logan stands and takes a step.

“Wait,” Heath rasps. “If I explain, will you stay?”

“You think you can explain why I saw a woman be murdered in your ring?” Lucas asks. He moved back but was only an arm's length away from Heath.

“You don’t know what that woman did. You think she was innocent?” he yells. “She came to me after she killed her whole family. She had lost all of her humanity. I gave her a way to make up for it.”

“By a man?” I ask.

“By the man that was mated to her daughter. The daughter that she attacked. He had already marked her; they were bonded in every way, and she took that from him. So yeah, I allowed the fight to be contained and both of them to keep some dignity. She deserved it,” he says ruthlessly.

“They were mated?” Logan asks, his hand flexing on my leg.

“Yes. What would you do if Breeane was killed?”

My mates look at me, and I see the answer in their eyes. “Does that happen often? Do people come to you for vengeance?” I ask.

“Sometimes,” he replies. “I’m sorry.”

“You're sorry?” Lucas asks.

“I used your mate as bait. I needed her brother to grow a pair and come for her. I was curious to see if he would or let her take the hit for the money. I made a mistake in allowing two of my men to approach her. I didn’t expect them to hurt her and fuck it up so badly. I should have handled it differently,” Heath offers uncomfortably.

“Thank you,” I say when everyone is watching him in shock. “I believe you.” I tighten my hand on Logan’s neck and he looks down. “But I still won’t stay. I want nothing to do with a brother that would put his sister in danger.”

“Too late.” Heath looks at the door.

Shock fills the room as my brother is escorted into the barn by Ryker, Ryker’s hand around the back of his neck, his feet dangling a foot off the ground.

“Quinn called. He was going to run,” Ryker informs us. He pushes Caleb to his knees, dropping the bag that was in his other hand beside him. “He’s not the kind of family you need,” he tells me and then looks at Heath and glares. “I don’t like you. I’m going back to my mate.” He glances around the room. “You’re welcome,” he says and disappears.

I swallow the laugh that bubbles up. I catch Bash’s eye, and his lips tip up.

“The king of vampires,” Heath says softly but filled with respect.

“Sis.” Caleb looks the same but also different. His clothes are dirty and baggy. He’s lost weight, and his face is lined with stress and anger. I have to guard my heart when it wants to reach out to him. “Your face,” he whispers, getting to his feet. “Shit.” I see a flash of regret. “Let her go.”

“I was going to anyway. I was waiting for you.”

“Bree,” Caleb says sadly.

“Are you going to get help now?” I ask bitterly.

“Yes, I promise,” he says.

“I’ve heard that before.” I take a breath. “You call me when you are the brother I had years ago. The brother who didn’t put me in danger. I don’t want anything to do with you right now.” I look at Heath. “I don’t think you are an evil man, but I would like to leave now.”

“Good luck, Breeane. Your mates are very lucky. You are going to be a beautiful lion.” Heath smiles when my mates growl menacingly. “Don’t forget Trevor,” he reminds us.

“I never was a fan of rules,” Lucas says and punches Heath in the face and then the stomach. “Stay the fuck away from our mate.”

Heath hisses as he doubles over but doesn’t act on his earlier threat.

Las grabs Trevor, and I look away, not caring what they do to him. Everyone leaves before us except the dragons. Logan stops beside Laken.

“Laken?” Logan questions.
