I thought about how everything had changed between us. From complete and utter distrust and resentment to a genuine bond that felt as sweet and joyous as life itself.

Rowan helped me see that he had changed and would do whatever it took to make things right after everything his father did. In a situation where he could’ve turned and run away from the chaos left in Rose Valley after the fact, he came back and tried to rectify it.

Even when nobody wanted to listen to him. When nobody thought he was worth listening to.

But all of that was different.

He gave me something new to live for, and he gave me such a precious gift.

My baby. Our baby.

While the thought of giving in and letting that peaceful rest claim me sounded tempting, a wave of rage coursed through my system. It took out the cowardly thoughts in its wake and left me with no choice but to act.

I wouldn’t let her kill me, especially not with the beautiful life growing inside me.

That baby already meant the world to both me and Rowan, and I wasn’t willing to give that up.

Zeroing in on Keres, a single memory popped into my mind. The pendant choker around her throat. How the wolves had been siphoned into it.

I didn’t know if my spontaneous plan would even hold up, but I had no other choice.

Mustering up what strength I had left, I fought against her hold and reached for her throat in return.

There was a flicker of confusion in Keres’ gaze as I mirrored her own movement and placed a palm against the pendant.

Narrowing my eyes at her, I let my anger mount and mount until my power rose to the surface.

“I’m not dying today,” I muttered, squeezing her throat before that magic manifested within my palm and fired.

In a blast of red, that light shot into the pendant, and Keres was sent flying away from me.

She went through the air until she crashed against the ground some distance away, stunned and frozen in her place.

As I approached her, I noticed how she blinked in disbelief, hands moving to feel for the choker.

Keres was otherwise fine as far as I could tell, yet there was nothing left of the pendant but a sear mark on her neck and the remnants of broken metal.

When the realization hit her, Keres began to mumble. “No. No, no, no! This can’t be happening!”

From behind me, that growling ceased. Throwing a glance over my shoulder, I saw that the wolves had stopped their pursuit and instead, ran to their respective shifters.

One ran through the meadow like a specter, passing through others in the way, and it leaped toward a young man. It collided with his chest and slipped inside, appearing more docile than they had been.

The young man slumped with immediate relief, touching his chest where it had been.

All through the meadow, those shadows returned.

Something changed then. The tables had turned.

Shifters all around us began to morph into their wolf forms, finally reunited with their second souls. They hit the ground on all fours, fur tousling in the breeze.

It was a touching sight to see, knowing just how relieved they must’ve felt at last.

A familiar melody came from behind me, and I found Hayley, Alora, and Sara standing with our coven sisters, wild-eyed from the chaos, yet beginning to chant.

It started low and quiet as they regained their bearings enough to join in one by one. The sound sent a shiver through me, and I realized what they were up to.

The pendant was destroyed, and the wolves were freed, but Keres was still an issue at hand.
