“Yes.”

With a hiss, she turns towards Walker, briefly lowering her hands before redirecting her attention to me. There’s a moment between us when her eyes are fully on mine and I don’t know what is coming next.

Then her arm rears back as we look each other in the eyes. Right before she punches me in the face. “I hate you.”

She twists to Walker. Her eyes are black as coal as she spits, “And I hate you.”

Walker steps closer. His hand stretches out, and he grabs Ella, pulling her against his body and embracing her inside his enormous arms. “You don’t hate me,” he breathes into her head. “How can you hate your alpha? How can you hate me when you know you’ve always loved me?”

“No.” She bawls against his chest. Her back lifting and falling with each sob. “I hate you.”

“Ssh. No, you don’t.” Walker lifts her in his arms and strides out of the room as I watch him hold her close to him, purring into her head to console her.

My gaze shifts from Ella to Jake as he tilts his head to one side as he contemplates me.

“Did your pack plot to kidnap Ella?” Jake asks, stepping one foot forward.

“No.”

“Liar!”

“I’m not.”

“Then what were you talking to Walker about and why didn’t you stop Ella from hitting you?”

“She was hitting me because she blamed me for her father’s death. That...” I blow out a breath. “Is true.”

“I don’t understand,” Jake says. “It was all part of the same situation. She was kidnapped. There was a tip-off to say where she was and she was rescued before her father went back into the warehouse to kill the kidnapper, but was killed himself.”

I nod. “Everything you just told me is true, but my pack didn’t plot to kidnap Ella.”

Jake narrows his eyes skeptically.

I shake my head. “It’s true. They wanted Ava, her sister. Ella was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The air in the small room crackles with tension as Jake stares and takes my words in. “Okay.” Is all he says as he strolls around the office and takes a seat at Walker’s desk. “But you didn’t want Ava.”

“No. I never wanted any kidnapped omegas. That’s the reason I called Walker to let him know about the two girls.”

“Why did you call Walker and not her father?” Jake asks, his elbows rest on the desk, and he taps his fingertips together.

“I saw the anguish in his eyes on the television when her family were begging for the girls’ return.”

Jake regards me for a moment before he speaks. “You called him because you recognized him as her alpha?” I know it’s a question because of the way he tilts his head and waits for my response.

“I called him to make sure that the situation would be handled with care. I knew he was calmer than her dad, and that he had contacts to get the job done. I called him to make sure my omega was saved.”

“Your omega?” he says.

I nod. “I didn’t want Ava, omega or not. She wasn’t mine.”

“Neither is Ella, but you never stopped your pack from going after Ava in the first place,” Jake continues.

I let out a bitter laugh.

Jake leans back in the chair.

“I wasn’t the leader of that pack. I was just like you. Going about my business as usual and having decisions thrust upon me.” I swallow as I think about my old pack. “I was not a good judge of character back then.”
