She almost jumps to attention and as I reach for her hand, she is wise to come quietly.

I make a point of walking past the woman’s table holding Lilli’s hand like the most ruthless guard and as we pass them, I nod to her companion.

“Governor Johnson. It’s good to see you again.”

He nods respectfully, his eyes dragging enviously over Lilli’s chest. For some reason, it irritates the shit out of me that he believes she is no different to his own companion and I tighten my hold on her hand and say roughly, “Carter Lamont.” He spins his head in my direction, and I bend down and whisper in his ear, “Make his energy plant disappear.”

He freezes at the steel in my voice, and I straighten up and nod to his companion.

“Good evening to you both.”

I turn to the Governor and say softly, “You should choose your, um, employees a little more carefully. This one has many other offers of employment that may come back to bite you one day.”

He glares at her angrily and as I pull Lilli away, she attempts to snatch her hand away from mine, causing my grip to tighten even further. Her soft gasp tells me it hurts and she better get used to that because her ass is going to be on fire after the stunt she pulled tonight.

CHAPTER 12

LILLI

Ican’t believe this is happening. I thought I’d made it. As soon as the fresh air hit me, I was taking huge gulps of it and rejoicing in winning.

I turned right out of the door and ran down the sidewalk straight into a human wall. A strong voice whispered darkly, “You appear to have lost your way. Allow me to escort you back to your table.”

The seriously dark eyes staring at me belonged to Mikhail’s friend and as several men moved around us, I knew I had no choice. I was trapped.

At least he allowed me to walk into the restaurant on my own. As if I had merely stepped out for the fresh air I craved so much.

Nobody watching had any idea of what just happened except for one man. Him. The man who is fast becoming my dark nemesis. The man starring in my most violent nightmares. I felt his predatory gaze sliding across my skin, creating goosebumps as I walked toward him. I felt his anger and choked on it as I attempted to play innocent. He is angry. I knew it as soon as I saw him and now I must apparently suffer the consequences of that.

We spill out into the night air and his freak show of a car is waiting for us. The passenger door is open, and he wastes no time in bundling me inside and snapping on the seatbelt with a grim warning attached.

“Try to escape again and I will find you and your bed for the night will be tied to the chair at Pikes Creek.”

I shiver at the memory, and he wastes no time in slamming the door and joining me on the driver’s side.

As the beast roars and the tires squeal, my heart rattles the cage attempting to get out. I am trapped. Imprisoned by my biggest mistake and something is telling me I’m about to make another one.

He says nothing all the way back to his apartment and I’m not about to try to make conversation.

He will get nothing from me and as we drive into the elevator, he cuts the engine and leans back and sighs heavily.

“I hope you’re happy with your behavior tonight.”

“My behavior?” I snap, stunned at the arrogance of the man.

“Yes, Lilli, your behavior was disrespectful, which has made what happens next inevitable.”

“What happens next is you give me back my clothes and let me go, you arrogant piece of shit.”

I can’t help firing back, wondering when my sanity left me to my damnation.

He says nothing, which is probably the worst thing he could do, and I shiver in the seat beside him, waiting for the ax to fall on my unbelievably stupid head.

I am not dealing with a respectable man here, a sane one, even. I am tripping the light fantastic in a dark world of demons and I really should never have left my bed today. It’s funny how a life can turn on a bad decision and this one is shaping up to be the worst one ever. Why did I expect I could pull this off? I have let Reggie down and although I can never bring her back, I could have made her death count for something.

The elevator doors open and Mikhail drives the car slowly into a space that is several feet away from the neighboring high-performance vehicle.

As he cuts the engine, he sighs heavily.
