“Look, that’s what she wants,” said Devlin. “I’m kind of hoping we could wait for things with Sinclair, but with you and him all… whatever… maybe that complicates things, I don’t know. I just thought, you, me, and Maguire should try with Eleri, see how that works.”

“Oh, I’m being invited to fuck the omega?” I laughed softly. “You’re giving me permission?”

“It’s not going to be like that.” Devlin scuffed his foot against the floor. “She wants all of you, and—”

“And you can make me submit to you, so you’ll still control access to her,” I said.

“No,” he said. “I wouldn’t do that.”

“You never do it on purpose, Devlin,” I said, spreading my hands.

“You’re angry with me,” he said. “You’ve been angry with me ever since the omega showed up.”

“No, I think I’ve always been angry with you, but I just never let it out. I buried it somewhere, and a person can only do that so long before it just comes out.”

He wasn’t expecting that. He looked me over, wounded, sad. “Really? Always?”

I sighed heavily. I ran a hand over my face.

“Why?” he said.

I scoffed. “You know why.”

“If I knew, I wouldn’t ask.” He glared at me. “You want me to make it an order, is that it?”

“Fuck you,” I sneered, annoyed he had that kind of power over me. “It’s because I want you more than you want me, and you know it, and you take advantage of how fucking in love I am with you. You use me.”

“No, I don’t.” He stared at me in disbelief. “No, I definitely don’t do that.”

I bowed my head.

He tapped his foot on the floor. “I love you, too, Rohan,” he said in a hoarse voice.

I lifted my gaze to his. “Not in the same way that I—”

“Yes, in the same way,” he said.

“No, because you always—”

“I let this thing with not being able to knot for an omega fuck me up too much is all.”

“I really fail to see how that has anything to do with it.”

He sighed. “This is why, like, you say things that indicate that you’re always putting my needs above your own or whatever, but, fuck, Rohan, you don’t even understand me.”

“I definitely understand you.”

“You think I’m superior or some shit? That I’m not committing to you because I think I’m too good for you? It’s the exact opposite. You are normal, Rohan, and I thought that I was… not.” His face twisted.

“Wait, what?”

“Yeah, so, I always wanted to leave it open, so that you could leave me if you found an omega you wanted or something, so that you didn’t have to be stuck with a defective alpha like me. I was trying to give you an out, so that you wouldn’t feel bad about leaving me if you had to.”

My lips parted. “No,” I said. Except… it was obvious, actually. I knew him so well that it was ridiculous I hadn’t realized this before.

“But you know we sometimes talked about bonding an omega together.”

“And then you met her, and—”
