“It’s possible,” she said.

I chewed on my bottom lip. I hadn’t gone through a heat since that night in college, assuming that’s what it had been. I wasn’t sure I was keen to go through that again, especially only with Devlin.

He wouldn’t be enough.

I had a strong feeling, however, he wouldn’t like it if I said that.

Well, he was an alpha, wasn’t he?

Maybe that would make all the difference.

And maybe the implant would work very well. Maybe I’d never go into heat again, or not until I wanted to, anyway, when I was ready to have a baby or something.

I STOOD AT the door with my hands behind my back as they approached. When this assignment had been given to me, I had been outwardly very polite. Oh, certainly, nothing to worry about. Absolutely, I can facilitate that. Quite doable, I assure you.

Internally, I had thought it sounded crazy.

I’d been working for the royals for a while now, so I was sometimes on hand when alphas went out on the town. I’d once accompanied all three of the alpha princes, which was odd, because Prince Sinclair was almost never in the company of Prince Devlin for social outings. Something had happened between them in the past. I didn’t know what, but Sinclair was typically a loner now. Anyway, that night, all the alphas had gotten drunk and nearly gotten into some kind of scuffle outside some club.

I’d had to intervene, not only to protect the princes but to stop this from turning into tomorrow’s tabloid fodder.

Drunk alpha princes were not easy to wrangle. These were not weakling rich boys. They were tall and strong and they had that alpha thing about them, that ephemeral sort of feeling to them, something that made you want to do whatever they say. They seemed in charge. You wanted to follow their orders.

It was extremely hard to fight that, to be honest.

I worked with other bodyguards who crumpled the minute an alpha turned his gaze and his voice on them and gave them a direct order. Back off, let us handle this, was about all it took for those sorts of lads.

I could withstand it, but it never felt good, I had to admit. It made some animal part of me cringe and whine even as I stood my ground. But I did stand my ground.

So, I knew that was why I’d been picked for this job, trying to keep an alpha prince off an omega.

Fuck my life.

At least I’d negotiated a pretty sweet bonus for my hard work. I’d earn it, no question.

Now, I heard their voices before I saw them.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t think to warn you about her before we got there,” Prince Devlin was saying. I recognized his voice.

“No, she was nice,” came the softer, female voice. Must be the omega. Her voice was pleasant. “I mean, I think she was nice, just… serious. She has it all planned out, and there’s no room for any sort of error.”

“Exactly,” said the prince.

“You seemed so upset about it, but before, you said you wanted to wait anyway,” said the omega.

“I never wanted to wait,” muttered the prince. “It’s the right thing to wait. The Queen’s not wrong about that, but it’s awful.”

“I think you’re realizing it’s just awful when someone takes your choice away,” she said pointedly.

The prince chuckled.

The two came into view, coming up a stairwell to my left.

He spun her around, pressed her into the wall next to a painting of some alpha princess from the 1700s, and kissed her hard.

I stared. Which I shouldn’t be doing, but I felt mesmerized.
