Shelby

NOW

I pull the door shut behind me, inhaling the morning air. It’s still warm, despite being early in the morning, and I search for some shade to wait in until my cab arrives.

I’m still grinning at the thought of my best friend Ivy and her boyfriend Griffin when a truck pulls up beside me.

“Shelby?”

Uh-oh.

My heart races at the voice, and I panic, knowing this chance encounter could ruin everything for Ivy and Griffin.

The man leaning out of the truck is my best friend’s dad, Kevin, who is best friends with Griffin, the man she’s secretly seeing.

He’s also my dream man.

Yeah, I know. It’s hopeless.

“Kevin,” I say, hoping he doesn’t notice the way I’m staring at his muscular arm that’s resting on the truck. No one does this to me—no one. Only Kevin.

Kevin gazes at me, taking in my skimpy outfit, his eyes narrowing.

“What are you doing here?” He demands, his eyes darkening as he registers where I am.

Think, think!

“I stayed with a friend and I was walking home.”

Kevin doesn’t buy it.

“Get in the truck, Shelby,”he commands, sending a shiver down my spine.

“But I’ve ordered a cab,” I protest, licking my lips as anxious excitement thrums through my veins.

Kevin arches a brow. “Then unorder it.”

I nod, my fingers swiping over my phone as I locate the cab, which is a few blocks away, and cancel the journey.

I make my way to the passenger side of the truck and curse my tiny skirt as I haul myself into the seat. Kevin doesn’t look amused, his eyes taking in my legs and heels.

“A friend, you say?”

Now he’s staring at my face, which is covered in last night’s makeup.

I roll my eyes as he moves his stare out of the window, his gaze fixed on Griffin’s house.

“What friend?”

I swallow, clipping my belt in and waving a hand.

“Can we just go?”

Kevin stares at me, then glances back at Griffin’s house.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” he growls, cutting the engine. “You and Griffin?”
