“You’re a bitch, Shelby. Always have been, always will be.”

“And you’re with me because?”

Finlay stares at me before winking.

“Because you’re hot and great in bed.”

Wow.

I pick up a shoe and throw it at his head, but he narrowly avoids it, ducking behind the door before it can cause any damage.

What the fuck am I doing?

This stupidflingbetween me and Finlay has spiraled out of control. Yeah, we have good sex, but there’s more to life than that.

I think back to the other day when Kevin confronted Finlay in the parking lot, and a shiver runs through me.

It’s annoying because I swear he’s perfect for me, and I’m here fucking around with the local bad boy I went to high school with.

A soft knock on my door makes me groan, and my mom pokes her head in. As usual, she’s immaculately dressed in jeans and a tight top, her make-up applied perfectly.

“Trouble in paradise?”

She raises a perfectly made-up brow and crosses her arms, giving me a sad look.

“It’s not paradise,” I say with a sigh. “What’s up, Mom?”

“I’m going out. There’s a reunion night at the new bar in town.”

Mom calls Bill’s the new bar even though it’s been here for over two years.

“Reunion?”

“Yeah,” Mom says, brightening up. “It’s for people who went to school in ancient times, you know? Like me.”

I roll my eyes and study her. She doesn’t look her age, not at all, and she’s in her fifties.

“You’re gorgeous, Mom.”

“Come with me. It’s only me and Caroline heading down together—you never know, you might meet a sugar daddy.”

I scoff. “You might.”

“Now there’s an idea.” Mom taps her chin thoughtfully before grinning at me. “I want someone who looks like George Clooney. There’s no one like that in this town.”

“No,” I agree with her and frown at my closet.

Maybe I should go.

At least I know Finlay and his buddies won’t be there tonight.

“I mean, your lucky best friend bagged one of the hottest bachelors left in town.” Mom pouts and I can’t help but laugh.

I already know what’s coming next, too.

She’s as predictable as a storm in November.

“Kevin must be gay,” Mom muses. “Because if he isn’t interested in this—” she points at herself and then smirks, “—Or any other woman in this town, then he must have; you know, tendencies.”
