I hang up before he can finish saying my name and turn my phone on silent.

If Finlay is pissed enough, he’ll hammer on my door and ask my mom where I am.

She wouldn’t tell him.

There’s silence from behind Kevin’s door, and I feel my shoulders sag, my earlier anger gone.

I can’t understand Kevin; I really can’t. One minute he’s pushing me away, then the next, he’s pretending to be into me in front of my mom and Tommy. Then the minute they’re gone, he’s back to Mr. Inappropriate.

It’s tempting to stride into his room and strip off, see if he can resist me then.

But knowing Kevin, he would. He’s resisted me so far. Even if he has come close to kissing me, he stillhasn’t.

Maybe I should accept that nothing is going to happen between us and move the fuck on.

The door across from me opens, scaring me to death.

Kevin stares at me with a strange expression before walking into the bathroom.

“Go to bed,” he commands from the bathroom, and Iseriouslyhave to bite my tongue to stop myself from telling him to fuck off.

I’ve still got respect for him, after all.

“Shelby, go.”

How does he know I’m still standing here?

I twist on my heel and storm into my best friend’s old bedroom, a wave of nostalgia hitting me.

Her perfume still fills the room, her pretty bedspread the same as it always is. I stand in the doorway, a lump in my throat. I’d do anything to talk to her right now.

I know what she’d say too.

‘He’s my dad. Get over it. It won’t ever happen.’
