Kevin:Are you awake? Meet me at Rico’s cafe opposite the mall if you are. Please.

My finger hovers over the send button briefly before I thinkfuck it,and I hit send.

She doesn’t reply, not that I expected her to.

She’s purposefully ignored me unless Ivy has been around, and damn, it’s cut me deep.

I’m about to leave when the door opens, the bell announcing a new arrival.

It’s her.

My breath catches in my chest when she scans the cafe, her midnight black hair cascading over her shoulders in loose curls. She’s still got makeup on from the night before—I know she went out with Ivy because I hung out with Griffin in a bar.

Her eyes meet mine, and for a second, I’m sure she’s going to smile at me, but when she strides over, her expression is cold.

She’s dressed in jogging pants and a tank top with a hoodie unzipped over it, revealing her gorgeous body.

Shit.

She sits in front of me and shrugs her shoulders.

“What do you want?”

She sounds bored, and it pisses me off. One minute she wanted us to give things a go, then when I said it wouldn’t work, she’s a fucking bitch to me.

So what if I said we’d try?

I can’t force myself to…

Feel for her? But you do have feelings for her.

“Good morning to you too.”

Shelby doesn’t flinch.

I love her fiery spirit, but not when it’s directed at me.

“Kevin, let’s not bullshit one another. Tell me what you want.”

You.

“Do you want a coffee? At least have a coffee,” I say, rising to my feet.

Shelby sighs and looks over at the coffee menu that’s scrawled over the wall, chewing on her lip as she does.

It takes everything I’ve got not to reach over and pull her mouth to mine.

“A vanilla cappuccino, please.”

It’s probably the most reluctantpleaseI’ve ever heard, but I respect that she used her manners on me.

She probably wants to tell me to fuck myself, so I’ll count myself lucky.

The barista makes her drink at record speed, asking if I want chocolate on top. I have no clue, but I figure chocolate is always a good thing, so it encourages me to buy her a chocolate muffin too.

I take a minute to watch Shelby, who’s gazing out of the window, her chin resting on her hand. To anyone else, she looks like she’s people-watching, having a peaceful Sunday morning alone.

But her shoulders are tense, and her leg jiggles with anxiety.
