Shelby

Kevin stares at me, his chest heaving. I saw how his eyes scanned me earlier, the fear bare to see.

And now, as he struggles to smile, the question remains in his eyes.

“Did he hurt you?” Kevin chokes out, his jaw tightening.

“He tried to,” I admit, lifting my head high. “But he didn’t.”

Kevin’s stare penetrates my soul, sending shivers through me.

“I’ll fucking kill him.”

“No,” I say as panic fills my chest. “Stay with me. Please.”

Kevin shakes his head and chuckles.

“You think I’d leave you to kill him? No. I have plenty of time.”

I swallow, and he steps forward, pulling me against him. I lose myself in his scent, clutching his shirt. As soon as I close my eyes, I see the grass beneath me and feel his weight on my back. The sound of tearing fabric as Tommy whispers shit in my ear.

“Shelby.”

Kevin tightens his grip on me and tilts my chin, searching my eyes.

“You’re strong. Don’t think about him, not now, not ever. Do you hear me?”

His voice is gruff but cracks with pain, and I nod, despite knowing I can’t promise I’ll never think of my ordeal again.

“Look at me.”

“I am,” I whisper hoarsely, tears spilling down my cheeks.

“Properly. Seeme.”

Kevin.

The one man I’ve always loved and wanted.

“I do.”

“No one will hurt you ever again. Ever.”

I nod, but fear cripples me. Tommy may be with the police, but what about his sick friends?

I shudder, and that’s when Kevin kisses me.

It’s soft at first, and I know he’s trying to make me forget. A sob catches in my throat when he pulls me closer, his hands in my hair and on my waist. It’s like he’s trying to inhale me, and I let him. I’m crying, and he pulls away, kissing me repeatedly. His thumbs wipe my tears, and then he says something I never thought I’d hear.

“I’ve never been so scared as I was driving here,” he says softly, his forehead on mine. “And I knew that if anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to breathe anymore.”

My heart shifts in my chest, taking my breath with it.

Before I can respond, though, Kevin nods, continuing.

“I wouldn’t be able tobreathewithout you, Shelby.”
