“Let me,” I choke out, turning my head to gaze into his eyes.

He nods and fucks me harder, all the while holding my gaze.

It sends me to another level, especially when he grabs the hair falling into my eyes.

I let it all leave me; the fear of Tommy and Finlay, the unknown of what will become of Kevin and me, and the worry for my mother.

Everything leaves my body in salty tears, and then I smile at Kevin, telling him silently that everything will be alright.

Finally.

Kevin

My phone interrupts my working day at around two in the afternoon, and I grab it with a wave of anxiety. It’s been three weeks since Shelby came home with me, and leaving her in the daytime is the hardest thing I have to do. She’s strong as fuck, though, and she’s seeking therapy already after what that bastard did to her.

Tommy.

I haven’t forgotten about him.

Because even though Shelby is strong, she’s got a vulnerability about her now that calls out to the darkest part of my soul, the one that wouldkillto protect her.

So she’s home playing house, and although she’s already told me she’s going back to work in the bar next week, I’m already trying to talk her out of it.

Not because I’m a jealous prick—I am—but mainly because I know she wants more than working in a bar in Hendrix for the rest of her life. If she just wanted to work in the damn bar, I’d support her. I’m never going to be the guy that tries to control her.

I love her feisty spirit, and I’d never want to tame it.

But if anyone touches her or crosses her?

Well, I can’t promise I’ll be too nice.

“Hello?”

Griffin called late last night to say Ivy was going into labor but that the nurses said it would be a slow process, so not to drive over just yet.

This may be the call!

I glance around with excitement as Ivy scoffs.

“Hello, Dad.”

Uh oh, her voice holds the accusatory tone that tells me I’ve fucked up, and I know what this is about.

Fuck.

“Hey, sweetheart. How are you?”

“Dad. I know about Shelby.”

I wince, waiting for her to tell me her opinion. I feel shitty for keeping it from her, but it had to come out sooner or later.

“Oh,” I say, rubbing the back of my neck. “You do?”

“Dad!” Ivy says, exasperation lacing her voice. “Griffin told me.”

I grit my teeth and send a silent death threat to my friend.
