“Did you fire her?”

My dad’s brows shoot up to his hairline, and I quickly step in front of him, soothing him like I would a child.

“No, no. He didn’t fire me. It just wouldn’t be appropriate for me to work for him anymore, considering…”

I pause, finding it exceedingly difficult to get the words out.

Noah speaks up from his position near the kitchen counter.

“Considering our relationship.”

“Your relationship?”

My dad squints at us, and again, I’m left wishing someone would just take the hint.

“Dad, Noah and I—”

“What about you and Noah?”

A frown dances over my dad’s face, and my eyes fall to the floor. Christ, can nothing about today be easy?

“What’s going on, Liv?” I can hear the frustration in his voice, and my dad eyes me like he did when I was a teenager and got caught sneaking his booze.

“Please don’t look at me like that. I’m not a child.” The annoyance with his overprotective dad mode gives me enough strength to propel me through the rest. “Noah and I…are seeing each other.”

Dad’s mouth falls open, and shock reverberates through his expression. He says nothing for some time as he continues to look back and forth between Noah and me.

“How long has this been going on?”

I sigh. “A while. Almost since I started.”

In a burst of anger, Dad starts for Noah, but I put myself between them, pressing into my dad’s shoulders.

“If you manipulated her, I’m going to—”

“Dad! He didn’t manipulate me. If anything, it was the other way around.”

His eyes quickly shoot down to me, and my dad looks horrified.

“I’m not a kid, Dad. I want this. We both do.”

Noah pushes off the counter slowly. His words are colored with trepidation.

“John, I did not mean for this to happen. I didn’t want to hurt you or her. I still don’t. But the heart wants what the heart wants. And I love Liv more than anything.”

My dad glares at him. “You love her? You sure you’re not just in it for a piece of ass?”

“Dad!”

“It’s all right, Liv.” Noah steps up to my dad, looking him dead in the eye. “It’s not that. I swear to you. I love her. I’m willing to risk everything for her—my business, my reputation, and even my relationship with you, if I must.”

There’s a tense moment where the two men glare at each other, and I’m concerned this confrontation might turn physical. But then my dad nods and reaches out his hand.

He and Noah shake, and I’m able to breathe a sigh of relief. Today has been way too much for my hormonal self to handle.

“If you hurt her, I’ll fucking kill you.”

I want to laugh for a moment, but then I see the look on my dad’s face, and the chuckle dies in my throat. Noah doesn’t break eye contact with him and just nods once.
