She has a huge set of balls. Who is this girl? I’m irritated, but intrigued. Girls don't talk to me like this, and definitely not in public. I am used to polite chit-chat, but this girl is insane. She isn't from around here, and I can tell. The girls here didn't have filthy mouths, they are prim and proper, at least most of them. I’m not one to look past a beautiful girl, but ones with an attitude are a coin toss. Usually they are great in bed, but sometimes key your truck afterward. This one is tall with bright blue eyes and a wild cloud of tousled curls cascading down her back.

She wants me to bring my ego down, but it’s not up. Why does this woman hate me so much? My jaw slacks, and eyebrows draw close together, watching her give me a look like she is about to murder me. This is the second run-in. Does she hate everyone or just me?

She turns away and I tilt my head to the side with raised eyebrows. Here is a girl who has strong opinions and isn't afraid to voice them. I’m used to guarded conversations, but this girl is different. I rub the back of my neck, not even paying attention to my friend, but focused on her. Her words cut me like a knife. Pretentious prick. No good comebacks are coming to mind, and they never do when I need them. Ugh. I’m speechless. She has her back turned to me now, but her shoulders are back, chest out and chin high. This girl is so sure of herself and can most definitely hold her own. Is it bad I’m a little turned on right now?

I shake my head free of the dirty thoughts and clear my throat. "Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the last slice of apple pie is mine."

She rolls her eyes and shoves a bite of pie into her mouth. "Not if I get it first," she says, smiling with a full mouth afterward. "Oh, and by the way, the name is Raven and I'm not passing through. I live here."

Damn this girl knows how to push my buttons, but she didn't know how important apple pie is to me. So, I can't fault her but she could lose a bit of her attitude. Does she act this way with everyone? I can’t imagine anyone wants to be around her if she acts like this. My lips press together in a slight grimace, and I watch as she leaves a twenty-dollar bill on the table. I clench my teeth and glare as she sashays away.

A growl erupts and Liam cocks his head back and eyes go wide.

“You okay? She got your panties in a bunch?” he laughs, sliding a fry into his mouth.

“Shut the fuck up,” I say, watching her through the window cut across the street and get into a Honda.

“Don’t be mad at me because the girl hates your guts. Maybe next time, she’ll throw her coffee in your face. You better watch out. Although, it’s not everyday I get dinner and a show.”

He didn’t say one word the entire time, and now he wants to crack jokes. One day, he will get what is coming to him. Payback is a bitch.

What in the actual fuck is her problem though? My fingers nervously tear apart the greasy burger, my appetite gone. Out of all the places, why did she move here? I try to stay calm, to not let my emotions get the best of me in front of Liam. But deep down, my heart rate is soaring with rage. I do my best to force down a few fries, still seething. I take another bite and try not to think about her, but it's impossible.

"All I'm saying is you have met your match. If we are going to be seeing more of her, we might need to change our schedule," Liam says.

He's crazy. The thought of making any changes because of Raven makes my skin crawl. I have been in this town longer, and no one is going to come in here and mess with my tradition.

Not her or anyone else. The next time I see her, I’ll make it a point to find out what her problem is, because this feud or whatever she has against me isn’t going to last. She might think I’m a prick, but if she doesn't back off soon, things are going to get a lot messier than she wants.

Raven

The air bites into my skin as I step out of the diner and head for the car. I have had enough of Adonis's patronizing attitude. My mind racing as I walk, angry, but also a bit relieved. Someone needs to stand up to him more often and set him straight.

I reach the car and open the door, grateful to be out of the cold. I put the key in the ignition and start the car, feeling a little bit of peace as the familiar hum of the engine fills my ears.

My mind is still spinning with thoughts and emotions, but the sound of the engine is starting to calm me down. I grip the steering wheel tightly and close my eyes.

Adonis deserves to be put in his place, and I find myself feeling empowered and in control for the first time in forever.

The streets are empty. The only sound is the low hum of the engine and the occasional car whirring by. I watch the street lights pass in a kind of trance, thoughts of my future swirling around in my head.

Pulling into the parking lot, I cut the engine, grab my purse, and step out of the car. I take one last look at the night sky before heading inside.

I open up the door to see Betty doing dishes. She turns around and nods.

"Your brother's at work. Got called in."

Betty and I aren't best friends or anything, but we get along. I don't have any friends in this town, and right now I need to rant to someone.

I grab a bottle of water from the fridge, while Betty wipes off her hands. "Can we talk?"

She nods, and follows me to my bedroom.

I smile nervously twisting a lock of my hair needing some clarity on the situation I have found myself in.

I rant about Adonis and there is no end in sight. My brother's girlfriend, Betty, sits on the edge of the bed with a patient expression with one leg tucked under her butt, resting an elbow on her knee and a hand on her chin. She has grown used to my tirades, offering the occasional word of encouragement. I start off slowly building up steam until I’m foaming at the mouth.
