“No,” I quickly responded, and then I knew I’d fucked up. I’d basically admitted that I wasn’t alone.

She gasped. “Is it Ruby?”

“Talk to you tomorrow.”

As I hung up the phone, I could hear her saying, “It is?—”

“Sorry about that.” I wondered if Ruby had overheard Taylor’s side of the conversation.

“How long were you two together?”

“What?” I asked.

“You and Harper’s mom. How long were you two together?”

“We were never actually together.”

Ruby’s brow furrowed, and I could see her confusion. She wasn’t alone. Most people didn’t understand my and Tay’s relationship. Normally, I didn’t go into detail about our situation, but for some reason, I wanted Ruby to know that there was nothing between me and Taylor, not romantically anyway.

“We met the first week of boot camp. She heard my accent and asked where I was from. I told her Texas, and she said she had family in Wishing Well.”

“She does?”

“Yeah, the Hale’s. Chuck and Marcy are her aunt and uncle.”

“So, Kenna, Milo, and Mason are her cousins?”

“Yeah.”

“But she’s not from here.”

“No, she grew up in Boston.”

“Wow, what a small world.”

“Yeah. And after that, we just became friends—best friends. It was never anything more for years—until the night I got discharged. We went out to dinner and drank too much. I’m still not sure exactly how it happened. In the morning, we both knew it was a mistake. We laughed about it and promised each other that it wouldn’t change anything between us. And it didn’t. But two months later, Tay found out she was pregnant.”

“So did you guys try to be together then?”

“No. We talked about it. But we realized that wouldn’t be fair to either of us. Even though we love each other, we aren’t in love with each other. We’re too similar and too different in ways that would never work. So, we just agreed to be the best co-parents possible, and I think we do a good job.”

I could see the uncertainty in her eyes. I knew it was hard for people to believe that there was nothing going on between Taylor and me.

“What about you?” I changed the subject. “Are you seeing anyone?”

“I was, but um, I walked in on him in the shower with my best friend and roommate.”

“Fuck.”

“Yep.” She pointed her finger at me. “That’s exactly what they were doing.”

“I’m sorry.”

Her shoulder lifted in a shrug. “It’s fine. It’s just been… a lot…lately.”

I nodded. Not sure what I should say.

She bit the inside of her mouth. “Did you see the video?”
