"Beer it is."
She laughed. I went into the kitchen, pulled out a cold one and poured it into a glass. When I walked back into the dining room, Molly was sitting at the table.
"Here you go," I said in a weird TV dad sing-tong tone that I hated, but Molly didn’t react.
"Thanks." She took the beer and sipped it, then licked the foam off her upper lip. I found myself staring at her lips and forced my eyes away before the memory of what it felt like to kiss her crashed over me.
"So, Hailey doesn't know yet?" she said breaking the awkward silence, even though she already knew the answer. I took the conversational rope anyways.
"No. She should be here any minute, though."
"Okay, well, maybe we should figure out how to break it to her?"
"You're right. Any suggestions?"
She bit her lower lip and tapped her chin with her index finger.
"I could kiss you?"
My brows knitted together, and I frowned. "No."
"Hmm," she hummed, a pensive look on her face. "You could always tell her the truth. She's got a good head on her shoulders."
"But what if she tells someone? One of her friends?"
"I don't think she would."
"I'm not risking it. It's too much to ask of her."
"Ask of who?" Hailey said. She must have slipped silently into the house. I hadn't heard a damn thing.
"Hails," I said, smiling. "How was school? Good?"
"Uh-huh," she said. Her eyes darted between Molly and me. "You two hanging out now?"
"No. Well, yes. It's complicated."
"Okaaay," Hailey said and sat down, eyeing Molly. "What's up? Did you have something to tell me?”
"Your dad does."
Hailey's gaze swung to mine and her brows raised.
"Hails, um, Molly and I have been seeing each other."
Her brow furrowed. "Like going out?"
"Dating."
"I know what seeing means," she snapped and her eyes flashed only for a moment before they softened, and she looked at me with pity.
"Oh, okay. Wow. Well, can I have some pizza?"
"It's lasagna."
"Cool, whatever. Can I have some?"
"Yeah, yeah, of course. Let's eat."
