Tears prickle my eyes. Everyone told me it was a sure thing, but I wouldn’t let myself believe it. Finally — finally — I get to be a part of something that’s just mine.
“You okay, sister?”
I look up from the card, spotting my brother striding toward me across the lot. “Ben,” I say, easily telling his face from Alex’s. Always have. I flip the card to show him and he squints to read it. “Check it out! I got a bid!”
“Oh, is that all?” he says, exhaling hard. “Thought something was wrong. Why are you crying?”
“I’m not crying. I mean, almost, but…” I grin. “I’m just happy. I really wanted this.”
“Then, I’m really happy for you,” he says. “Congrats.”
I glance over his wide shoulder, realizing where he came from. “What were you doing at the campus wellness center?” I ask.
“Had to stock up before the evening rush.”
“Stock up?”
He smiles as he withdraws his hand from his jeans pocket, a small stack pinched between his fingers.
Condoms.
“Ew!” I say. “Ben.”
“What?” He shrugs. “Safety first, sis.”
“There’s no way you’ll need that many,” I say, counting at least… five? “Will you?”
Ben chuckles. “It’s Bid Night at Alpha Delta Xi, Dana. Shit’s gonna get wild. Also, this is nothing compared to the stack Alex and Connor grabbed earlier.”
My spine tingles. “Connor got some, too?”
“Damn near cleaned ‘em out, apparently.” Ben scoffs. “Dude’s on a mission tonight, I guess.” He offers me one. “You need?”

“You guys are idiots,” I say, rolling my eyes.
Ben tilts his head and extends his hand a little closer, a teasing smirk on his mouth.
I take the condom.
“Atta girl!” He laughs, then frowns. “But no Delta Xi.”
“No Delta Xi?” I repeat. “Why not?”
