“Sounds like a typical gaslighter. How long did you date him?”

She shrugs. “A year.”

I wonder how deep her feelings run for this asshole. She doesn’t seem that cut up about it.

“Did he stay in touch?”

She nods.

“And he doesn’t have your new number, right?”

She shakes her head.

“I don’t want you messagin’ him,” I say out of nowhere. “We can’t risk him findin’ out where you are. If he’s still hung up on you, and it sounds like he is, he may very well have had somethin’ to do with those threats.”

She looks at me sharply. “He wouldn’t do that.”

I stare at her. “Everyone’s a suspect, Trouble. I’ve seen things that would make your head spin, in and out of prison.”

“He’s too much of a pretty boy to have any brains about stalking me,” she says around a mouthful of food. “I’m not at all worried that it’s him.”

Once again, I remind myself she doesn’t know the brunt of the threats.

When I saw how detailed and descriptive those messages were, that’s when I knew this asshole meant business. They were specific, down to cutting her up into little pieces.

I point my fork at her. “First thing tomorrow, we start self-defense.” That has her frowning.

“Why?”

“Because you need to know the basics.” I hold a hand up to stop her butting in with the same spiel she gave me earlier. “And it’ll keep your mind sharp. Nothing makes an easier target than lettin’ your guard down.”

“Nobody knows I’m here, except my dad and you guys.” She sighs. “But I suppose I could do with a few lessons.” Something flashes in her eyes and I can’t work out what it is.

“Good.”

“Can we do something after that? Like check out the apartment block.”

“What for? You’re not gonna be socializin’.”

She looks at me sternly. “I still have to live my life, Rock. I can’t just trade one prison for another.”

My eyes go slightly wide. “Prison?”

“I meant…home.”

“No, you didn’t.” I stare at her for a long moment while she digs around in her take-out box.

“Let’s just drop it, okay?”

“Fine by me.”

I don’t need to know what the fuck is going on in her head anyway. It’s doubtful even she knows.

A few moments go by. “So?”

I glance up at her.

Her pretty clear blue eyes stare back at me. I never usually notice women’s eyes.
