Which didn’t explain why Logan Zander had the effect on me that he did. For a start, he was skinnier than Carlisle. Whereas Carlisle packed muscle and perfectly gelled hair, Logan had the dark-haired, cigarette-smoking party boy look down to a T.

Even I didn’t understand it.

Until he noticed me.

Chapter One

JESSICA

Scanning the items through my till, I sent a grateful glance to my supervisor, who dropped a TILL CLOSING sign on my conveyor belt. The little old lady in front of me politely smiled as she opened her bag, carefully placing her items in weight order.

“Is it almost home time?” She asked, her eyes crinkling in the corners.

“It is, yes,” I glanced at the digital clock on my till screen that tells me I finished four minutes ago.

Carlisle would be waiting for me impatiently, no doubt. I tallied the customer’s total, waiting as she counted her money.

“Sorry dear, I know you’re ready to go. But honestly, I have the exact amount here...” She fumbled in her purse, and I told her not to worry.

Except I really did need to go.

Finally, she gave me the money, and I closed my till. I tugged on my warm jacket and grabbed my gloves before checking out with my supervisor, Janet.

“See you Sunday, Jessica,” Janet gave me a thin smile before fluffing her hair up.

Cue Eric, the new security guard.

Seriously?

He had to be twenty-five, and she must be four hundred and five.

I left them to it, shooting Eric a sympathetic look as he chuckled.

“Alright, Jessie?”

“Yeah, you? Just going, sorry,” I breathed, skipping up the escalators two at a time.

I had to go up three sets to the staff door and another two flights of stairs to reach the lockers. By the time I reached it, I was knackered, wishing I was a million times fitter than I am. I dragged my bag out, grateful for the shorter shift today.

Two days off now, and no college!

Woo!

“Hey,” murmured a girl I recognised vaguely, and I smiled as I passed her. “You leaving? God. I haven’t even started my shift. Here till ten.”

“You have my sympathy, my friend.” I laughed, and she grumbled in response.

I skipped down the stairs, pulling my phone out to see a text from Carlisle.

CARLISLE

Baby, I’m not going to be able to pick you up. It’s Hunter’s birthday, so we’re going to town tonight. I’ll see you tomorrow, yeah? Love you, mush.

Oh, for fucks sake.

The bus it is, then.

I swiped through the rest of my messages, noting that Ellie had texted me and called me twice. So I called her back, wondering what I’m going to do with the rest of the evening.
