He lowered his sunglasses wordlessly, scanning each of us before his lip curled up.

"You brought townies?"

"Family," I muttered, and he shrugged.

"It's their funeral."

Jessica and Ellie exchanged a worried look, but Raff rolled his eyes.

"Is Kev in?"

"Do bears shit in the woods?" Tray replied without looking up.

I opened the door and inhaled, the familiar smell greeting me.

It was sweat and alcohol, but it was also something else.

Like-minded people who wanted to forget their realities and be who they really were. People snorted coke from glass tables, and women walked around wearing tight leather bikinis and ripped stockings. The dance floor was rammed, the music thumping in my ears and rumbling beneath my feet.

There wasn't a drug in the world you couldn't get here.

"Be right back," I said, heading to the vending machine.

Kev was slumped in front of it, tapping away on his game console like some ten-year-old on his final level of Zelda.

"Fucking hell, you look like shit," Kev declared cheerfully, pausing his game.

"Thanks, Kev, such a charmer."

"What's it gonna be?"

"The usual," I muttered, dropping some notes into his hands.

He handed me a clear packet, and I physically relaxed once I had it in my hands.

"Don't get into another fight," Kev called after me, and I frowned, turning to him with a smirk.

"Me? Come on. I'm a fucking angel."

With that, I turned back to the crowd, allowing it to swallow me into its darkness.

Time to party.

Chapter Twelve

JESSICA

“Drink?” Ellie asked, lacing her fingers through mine.

It was dark here, the only lights coming from lanterns on the wall unless you were on the dance floor, which was pitch black. I could only make out the people on the edges of it.

I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the dancing there. It was simply hypnotic. People backed up against each other, their partners’ hands trailing down their bodies in rhythm to the music. Hips swaying, heads thrown back, ass grinding. It was all happening. Men were watching women dance, and women were watching men.

It’s beautiful.

“Amazing, isn’t it?” Raff said, following my gaze. “Most of them are proper dancers. Like ballet and shit. They come here to let their hair down.”

“Seriously?” Ellie echoed, crossing her arms across her chest. “Andwe’recalled the townies?”
