“Yes,” Jessica answered flatly, heaping spoonfuls of pasta into the three bowls. “Why do you care?”

“I don’t.” I scoffed as she turned to hand me a bowl of piping hot pasta. “I’m making conversation.”

Her eyes met mine, and I felt like a cunt for a moment.

What am I meant to say, though?

“Well, choose a different subject.”

“Why?” I pressed, groaning at the taste of the delicious food she’d just given me.

“Because.”

She sat across from me, swirling her spoon in her pasta before lifting it to her perfect lips and blowing on it. I was fucking transfixed, and she shot me a glare.

“Why are you staring at me?”

“Because,” I retorted, and she rolled her eyes.

But she smiled, and that was a victory all by itself.

“What are you doing tonight?” I asked her, dropping my voice, so Ellie didn’t hear me.

“I don’t know. Ellie wants to go out, but I’m not in the mood.”

The front door slammed, and the sound of my best friend shouting my name filled the house.

“Tell me you’re awake, arsehole,” Raff called out, strolling into the kitchen. His eyes fell on Jessica and me, and he grinned.

“Oh, I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”

“No.” Jessica shook her head, avoiding my eyes. “Logan was just asking what I’m doing tonight.”

“Were you now?” Raff chuckled, picking up the bowl of pasta that Jessica had left for Ellie. “Oh my God, what is this culinary delight?”

Ellie strode back into the room, snatching the spoon and bowl from Raff with a look of disdain.

“That’smine, thank you very much.”

Her voice was icy, and the playful light died in my best friend’s eyes. Ellie looked at Jessica before nodding towards the other room.

“Shall we leave the playboys to it?”

“Playboys?” Raff scoffs, his brow furrowing. “What’s that about?”

Jessica picked her bowl up, avoiding my gaze as the girls walked into the lounge, closing the door behind them.

“Mate, what have I missed?” Raff sighed, slumping onto the seat Jessica had just vacated.

I shrugged my shoulders, bewildered. One minute Jessica was kissing me and spending the night in my bed; the next, she didn’t want to talk to me.

“Fuck knows.”

Raff chewed on his tongue, staring out of the window thoughtfully.

“Well, I want to know,” he smirked, nodding towards the door. “I’m gonna ask Ellie.”

“You’re either brave or fucking stupid,” I responded, thinking about why Jessica wouldn’t even look at me.
