“So what’s your deal?” I ask.

“My deal is that I am depressed,” she says. “I wasn’t lying. I just… don’t have a reason like you do.”

I frown.

“I was rejected by my mate,” she reveals, a slight red tinge to her cheeks. Her scent of embarrassment fills the room, and it’s my turn to be surprised.

Does she really think that him rejecting her is something she should be ashamed of?

The stupid cunt fucked her over. He’s the one who should be ashamed.

“Your mate rejected you?” she nods. “Who the fuck is he?” I snarl, clenching my fists so that I don’t do something stupid. My palms start to bleed, the scent of my blood fills the air, as my nails have shifted into claws.

Her eyes fly open, and she gives me a soft smile.

“It’s okay,” she soothes, resting her tiny hand on my arm. It’s freezing. She’s clearly freezing.

And that just pisses me off even further.

“It is not okay. Tell me who fucking hurt you!” I hiss, pushing her arm away. “Tell me who did this to you, and I guarantee by sunrise he’ll no longer be breathing.”

A ghost of a smile traces her lips as if what I’m saying is funny.

“That’s not the first offer I’ve had to end him,” she says, giving me a smile I can only guess is smug.

Is this another manipulation tactic?

Is she telling the truth?

I wish I could trust her. But I can’t.

I can’t trust anyone.

Not even myself.

“Well then, clearly, the people who are offering are not good people,” I snap. If she’s talking about my brother and her other mates, she needs an upgrade.

But she just smirks. “Well, I’ve got new mates now, and I’m a lot happier. His death is something I don’t want on my conscience.”

“Are you happier?” I ask, my pointed tone causing her eyebrows to raise. “Because, from this conversation here, all you’ve done is whine about how depressed you are.”

She shrugs. “I might be depressed, but at least I know I want to live.”

“All right, okay, way to start throwing digs,” I say, causing her to laugh.

“So, you really want to die?” she asks.

“I don’t want to, but it’s the only way that I’ll get to see my mate again. I don’t care whether I’m living or dead as long as I’m with her.”

“Well, that’s, um, good, I suppose.”

She blushes, looking away from me, and my heart stops for a second before resuming.

I’ve got a lot on my plate, but tracking down her ex-mate has now just been added.

I’m going to find out who he is.

Then, I’m going to make him wish he was good enough for Nora.
