CEVON

Unknown

We know you have her, Cevon.

“What’s wrong?” Nora asks, giving me a soft smile from where she’s hovering in the doorway to my office.

She helped me send a few emails this morning before going to the library to read whilst I had a meeting. I’ve got to have an in-person meeting on Thursday, and I’m not looking forward to it.

“Nothing,” I reply, smiling at her.

My phone buzzes again, and I glance down to see that an unknown number is calling. Fuck.

They’ve gone from texting to calling within a minute, and I know they’re not going to back off.

My heart stops, and I give Nora a tentative look. “Can you close the door on your way out, please? I have work to do.”

“I know you’re lying,” she says, closing the door and walking towards me. Does she ever just listen? “Want to know how I know?”

“Humour me.”

But my heart won’t settle down. The phone is buzzing, and I’m not sure what I’m going to do when I answer. I’m not sure what to say.

I’m not even sure who I hope is on the other end.

“You didn’t try to force me out,” she says, stepping closer. “You used the word please.” She’s by my side now and gives me an upside down smile. “You smiled at me.”

I frown, not believing any of that. But in particular, I don’t smile anymore. I definitely didn’t smile at her.

She glances at the phone in my hands and raises an eyebrow.

“Who is on the phone, Cev?”

“I don’t know.”

She nods, and gently takes my hand in hers, the one clutching my mobile. She unclenches my fingers from the death grip I’ve got on it and takes it from my hand.

I’m not sure why I don’t fight her.

If she answers and it’s one of her mates, things between us will change.

If she answers it and it’s one of the hunters, things between us will change.

If she answers it, everything is going to change.

But, still, I can’t bring myself to stop her. I let her lift the phone to her ear after sliding the button along.

“Hello?” she says before tears fill her eyes. “Atticus. Are you okay? I’m so glad to hear your voice.”

My heart stops, but Nora doesn’t move away from me. She doesn’t take this moment to run off with the phone and talk to my brother. Instead, she sits on my lap, keeping the phone to her ear.

“I’m fine,” she says, making eye contact with me as she says this. “I’m good, honest.”

“Are you hurt?” he demands, and hearing that voice, hearing his concern for her, kills me.

“No, of course, he hasn’t hurt me,” she says, looking at me. I can’t decipher her look, but she’s smiling a little.
