Page 143 of Survival is Hard

“You mean… how can you face your brother?” I ask, showing a part of my hand that I’ve not yet revealed.

Let’s hope it helps me, and doesn’t fuck this up.

“I fucked him over,” Cevon says, his tone sounding distant and confused.

I shrug. “I know Atty almost as well as I know you. He’s a good man, and he’s loyal. He protects his people, Cevon, and you are very much his people.”

“Wait.” His brain seems to catch up, and confusion fills him properly now. “You knew… know… you know I have a brother? You know about Atticus?”

It’s time to come clean, Nora.

“I’ve known who you are from the beginning, Cev,” I say softly. “And even if I didn’t, there’s lots of similarities between you both.”

“No, there’s not,” he snaps, glaring at me.

“Ignoring the fact that you look alike,” I say, raking my eyes up and down over his frame. “You’re a lion, you’re dominant, you’re caring, you’re a bit of a dick. Believe me, you and your brother are a lot alike. Don’t cut yourself short because you chose different paths.”

“Chose different paths?”

I don’t take the bait. He’s trying to cause an argument, but I’m not going to be drawn into it. We’re so close to getting what I want.

What I need.

“It’s just time to end the war, my love, and to come home,” I say softly.

“How the fuck did I end up with you?” he whispers, coming closer and inhaling my scent. He’s obsessed, but, then again, when you’ve been alone in the darkness for so long… any bit of light is important to cherish. I know that better than anyone.

I reach up to press a kiss to his jaw. He’s too tall for me to reach any higher, but the way he’s bent over, I can. The sentiment is the same, and based on the way his eyes slowly flutter closed, he seems to appreciate it.

“And you know exactly how you ended up with me,” I say teasingly.

“Kidnapping?”

“That’s how you ended up with my physical body,” I say, smirking at him. “But as your mate… I think that was an entirely different situation altogether.”

“I never expected you to pull out a knife.”

“Fond times,” I tease, and he laughs. “Ready?”

Cevon’s demons have finally caught up to him. He can’t run anymore. He needs help. He needs my help.

I’ve fought my own inner demons, and I’m finally—sort of—at peace within myself. I know I want to survive, and I’m willing to put the work in to make that happen.

But just because I’ve had that realisation… doesn’t mean that fate is ready to give me what I want.

Happiness has always been the goal, but I’ve always been too busy trying to survive, to earn it.

It’s time for that to change.

It’s time for me and Cevon to go home, to our pride, so that we can fight for our happily ever after.

“No,” he sighs, taking my hand. “But for you? Always.”

* * *

“What happened to for you, always?” I demand, glaring at my mate who has a glare as equally intense aimed right back at me.

“That was before Atticus was a prick,” Cevon replies, shrugging. “You should’ve known that it would be hard for me.”
