Page 150 of Survival is Hard

“The other two periods are before a heat. They’re preparing you for ovulating, so that you’re more successful during your heat at procreating with your mates,” she says, and I smile. “Periods are nature’s way to help us conceive.”

“I see,” I say, but I don’t, really. But then it hits me. “Shit. So you’re going into heat?”

“I don’t know,” she says, biting her lip. “I thought over the last month that, yeah, my heats would be returning now that I’ve bonded back with my wolf, but I don’t know. I need to have a doctor’s appointment, and it was on my schedule once I got back from meeting with… Okay, do you know what? I’m not even gonna make that excuse. I’ve been too nervous, so I haven’t really prioritised it.”

“You’ve been too nervous?” I ask, and she nods. “Well, little darkling, that’s just not okay.” She gives me a watery smile. The nickname that I can’t help but call her makes me happy in a way I can’t explain.

“I’ve tried,” she says. “I’m trying. Everyday things are harder than the rest, and, obviously, you know that.”

“I do. Maybe that and then some,” I say.

She may have had it harder than me. Her mate chose to leave her. At least mine loved me. Not that it’s a competition, but if it were, I would say that she’s probably winning.

“So your period means that your heat is going to be starting soon.” She nods, wringing her hands together. “And that’s why you want to go home?” I ask. She shakes her head.

“No, I wanted to go home regardless, and this just confirmed it. Even if you were willing to accept us,” she says, giving me a soft smile. “You’re not enough to see me through heat Cevon, we both know this. My wolf will go crazy.”

“Yes, she will,” I say, closing my eyes. “Yes, she will.”

“But you got me the worst fucking tampons,” she says, and I frown. Is that why she was so mad a moment ago? “These aren’t going to be enough for my flow.”

“Your flow?”

“My period is going to be heavy. It’s my first one in six years,” she says. She’s so frantic right now, an erraticness that I can’t keep up with. “And you got me the fucking weakest tampons.”

“I thought… I thought the droplets were the size.”

She grabs a box and launches it at my head.

“Okay, I’ll um, go make some tea!” I say, and then I run.

I’ve had her try to claw out my throat.

I’ve had her stab me.

I’ve been on the other end of her wicked tongue.

But Nora on a period? I’m terrified.

Maybe we do need to be around the rest of her mates. At least then I might have a chance at surviving.

NORA

Things moved extremely quickly once Cevon made the decision that we would leave today. To my utmost surprise, he refused to let me be the mediator between him and my mates. Apparently, I’m too ill to do anything stressful like organise our way home.

I think Cevon is getting a little bit overprotective, but knowing his issues, I don’t complain. I can take some babying if it helps him stay in control, especially since he’s doing something extremely scary and out of his comfort zone.

But, when making all of his demands, he refused to talk to anyone except Devoss. That part did not surprise me at all. They’re pretty similar, despite also being wildly different.

I’m terrified about going home, knowing that things are going to be hard between him and Atticus.

We’ve got to drive a couple hours, and then we’ll be taking the helicopter home, so we’re not going to be home until about seven o’clock, which gives me all day to worry about things.

A fucking helicopter. We’re using it like it’s a taxi, and I’m absolutely shocked. This is the kind of rich life I’m not prepared to be a part of.

Cevon reassured me it was safe, as if that was my worry.
