I don’t think I know what words are at this point. Everything has gone to shit, and it’s all my fault.

“Well, that went better than I thought,” Voss says, but nobody laughs. “Micah, take Nora up to bed. I’m going to track down a moody lion and try to convince him to get some sleep. You four? I’d figure out how to apologise to our mate, and then how to apologise to our mate’s mate.”

Atticus sighs. “I thought he’d be sorry.”

“You thought he’d be sorry?” I ask, completely and utterly perplexed. “What has he done to be sorry for? Because, from everything I heard, he’s not actually done anything to you personally.”

“From when Cevon left to now, I’ve had eighteen pride members die from hunter attacks,” Atticus says, meeting my eyes. “You were targeted by them, and if it weren’t for us, you likely would have been the nineteenth. In the five years my brother has been gone, the five years he’s been with the hunters, I’ve lost nearly four people a year.”

“But—” I try to protest, and Atticus shakes his head.

“Revenge is one thing. But being a part of those who killed our people? I won’t ever forgive that.”

And, with that, Atticus turns and leaves the room. Perfect. Just what we want to hear.

“Come on, pretty girl,” Micah says, coming to my side. “Let’s go sleep this off. Hopefully everyone will be alive in the morning.”

“Is nobody going to ask how I am?” Malachi whines as Micah and I leave the living room.

I stop and turn and glare at him. “Everything you said about Lainey was unnecessary and hurtful. You deserved that punch, Mal, and if you think otherwise, you’re not the man I thought you were.”

He sighs and doesn’t argue as Micah leads me to my bed.

I quickly use the bathroom and change clothes before cuddling into my tiger mate.

“Let it out,” he commands.

“I don’t need to cry,” I say, shaking my head as I inhale his clean scent, the lavender from his clothing making me smile. “I knew it would be hard, but I’m prepared to deal with it.”

“Yeah?”

I nod. “Yeah. Want to make out?”

Micah snorts, and I push him onto his back before straddling him.

“I love you,” I murmur before pressing my lips to his.

It’s been a rough day. A really fucking rough day, and I think we’re going to have a lot more rough days before things start to get better.

But I’m willing to put in the work.

Let’s just hope the rest of my mates are. too.

“You’re distracted,” Micah murmurs, palming my ass. I murmur an apology before deepening our kiss.

But for tonight? I’m going to make out with my tiger mate and pretend that everything is perfect.

Because in our little bubble? It really is.

NORA’S WOLF

My human is strong. Stronger than ever.

But our mates are weak.

They’re in pain, and they’re embarrassing themselves in their quest to be right.

The lions need to fight it out. Draw blood. Prove who is worthy to be King.
