“I see.”

“Do you really?” he asks. “Because I’ve heard through the grapevine that you most definitely do not see.”

He smirks, finding himself pretty funny for that one, and I glare at him.

“Fuck off.”

We fall to silence, and his gaze wanders back to the child. There’s an aura around him, one I can’t really decipher. It’s not like he’s sad, but that’s all I can really tell. He’s just… off.

“My mum struggled to reproduce after having me,” I say, leaning backwards into my chair. “It turned out that she doesn’t have any viable eggs left, which is pretty common in mythical creatures. It’s part of why we’re so rare.”

“I care why?”

“I don’t know, I just figured since we’re here, I should talk,” I say.

“I’m not a fool, Griffin,” he says, sneering my name at me. “You’re wanting me to reveal my secrets so you can find my weakness and put me down before I do more harm.”

I snort, and his glare intensifies. “Cevon, mate, I already know your weakness. I don’t need to befriend you to find it out.”

“What is it?” I glance at the door Nora walked through and raise an eyebrow. “No. You’re wrong. Nora’s not my weakness.”

“Sure,” I say, nodding as if he’s telling the truth. “You just took her because you fancied it?”

“Exactly.”

“Right. And you kept her because it was nice to have company?”

“It actually wasn’t,” he replies. “She talks too much.”

“I see, and you came back with her because you wanted to connect with Atticus?”

“Absolutely not. He has no bearing on me whatsoever,” he says. “I came back with her because I need her in my sight or I’d not be able to function.”

“I see. But she’s not your weakness.” I don’t phrase it like a question, knowing he’s going to deny it.

“No.”

“Right.”

He glares at me, his eyes looking a shade or two darker than they did a moment ago. “You know nothing about my relationship with Nora. I don’t love her, I barely even like her, but that doesn’t mean I want her out of my sight. As long as I can hear her breathing and know she’s alive, then I’m good. That’s all I need.”

I nod. “Sounds extremely healthy, and not like you’re obsessed with her.”

“I’m not obsessed with her,” he snaps, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “She’s tiny and weak. She needs me to keep her alive, to make sure she eats and drinks. She needs my help, or she’ll end up just like Lainey.” He shakes his head. “No. I’m never letting her go.”

My heart shatters, just a tiny little bit, at knowing what he’s gone through. Thinking about Nora meeting the same fate? I understand why he is the way he is.

But for him to deny she’s his weakness is just stupid. Even a blind man could see his devotion to Nora.

He’s fooling nobody.

“Do you think she’s okay?” he repeats, glancing at the door. “She’s nervous about this appointment, and I won’t have her being upset again.”

“She’s likely fine,” I say, softly. “Do you want her to go on birth control?”

“No,” he says, surprising me. “I read up on it all last night.”

“You did?”
