I don’t think Cevon has worked on his hacking skills in the five years he’s been gone, but I’m not certain on that. If I’m using the home network, I need to make sure he can’t track what I’m doing.

If we go to him with suspicions of his dead mate, it’s going to cause more discourse between us, and I refuse to let Nora continue being stuck in the middle.

These are issues from a past she wasn’t part of, and it shouldn’t affect her future.

“Thank you,” Kai whispers, squeezing my shoulder.

I blink, looking up at him. “Shit, sorry. Yes, of course, I’ll help.”

He laughs. “I figured that when you started making notes on her.”

“I want something in return, though,” I say, and he raises an eyebrow. “Take Nora out on a date and try to fill her in on your issues with Cev. Please. She’s got her heat coming up, and she’s fucking terrified it’s going to be a brawl between us.”

My brother frowns, his dark eyebrows raising to his hairline. “We’d never fight during her heat.”

“So we claim,” I say gently. “But what happens if Cevon bonds her first or tries to claim sleeping on her left side? What if Atticus’s bite is bigger than Cevon’s? What happens—”

“I get it,” he mutters with a sigh. “We need to figure our shit out before her heat then, don’t we?”

“We do,” I say with a firm nod. “And this is a very good first step.”

“He was my friend,” Malachi says quietly. I can hear the sadness in his words, the pain flashing in his light blue eyes. “And I want to fix what got broken all those years ago.”

“I’ll find everything I can,” I reassure him, and he nods. “Check on Nora for me?”

He nods, but I don’t know if he returns to let me know how she’s doing because I immediately turn to the computer and start searching.

Lainey was a surprise that we weren’t prepared for, but maybe Cevon wasn’t a surprise for her.

Maybe he was a mark.

I just need to figure out why.

NORA

“Atticus!” Devoss roars, his voice echoing through the nearly silent house. I drop my book as a woman shrieks, the sound of fear filling the air, and I immediately race out of my bedroom.

Atticus is a few beats behind me, so I catch sight of a gorgeous woman sobbing in the hallway as Devoss paces angrily at the bottom of the stairs before Atticus overtakes me.

Voss’s eyes dart to us before he gasps. “Nora, get yourself back to bed, little mouse. You don’t need to be out here.”

“Go back to your room, Nora,” Atticus adds, but I shake my head and continue down the steps. Atticus sighs but doesn’t stop me, and I ignore the anger from Devoss.

Whatever is happening, he doesn’t want me around for.

“What’s going on?” I demand, and the woman’s sniffles stop as she looks at me. She’s about six foot tall, maybe even taller, and extremely slim. Like, my level of slim. She’s got ragged fingernails from the excessive biting, and her blonde hair is thrown up in a messy bun to hide the greasiness. I don’t know this woman, but I know we’re kindred spirits. “Are you okay?”

She nods, but then her icy grey eyes fill with tears again. “Shit, sorry, this just won’t stop.”

“What’s happening?” Atticus demands, coming to stand behind me. He rests his hands on my waist, comforting me as he regards the woman in front of us. He clearly knows her, but he’s confused as to why she’s here.

“Ari, where are your mates? I thought… we reached out to you months ago, and you said you had found your mates and were now safe.”

She nods, biting her lip as she blinks back her tears.

“They rejected her,” Voss says, barely holding onto his anger. “I got the call earlier and went to go pick her up. I did leave you a message, but I didn’t have time to wait for your approval.”
