“What?” Cevon snarls, a growl to his words, backed by the raging Alpha lion within. As my brother, a son of the Phoenix line, he’s strong and powerful in his own right. If he just tapped into the power he has access to, he could be a strong Alpha of his own pride, or second to mine.

He wants neither, though. All he wants right now is to be upstairs, desperate to be with our mate in her time of need.

I might not like his goals. I might struggle to see the person he now is and correlate it with the person I used to know. But I know he’s just as obsessed with our mate as I am.

That he loves her just as much.

Even if he’s not yet willing to admit it to her.

Soon enough, he’ll bond her, and she’ll know exactly how he’s feeling. Happy, sad, in love, and everything in between.

‘What is it?” Cevon repeats, and when I glance at the hand that has gripped my arm, I see the way his claws have shifted.

We’re going to need to watch him, to make sure he can be gentle, to make sure he’s not going to completely lose all rational thought.

“She’s fertile.”

“No!” Micah gasps, shaking his head. “She… I thought the doctor said that her hormones…three percent.”

He’s right. The doctor said her hormones weren’t anywhere near as viable as we thought, and that there was no way she’d be getting pregnant during this heat cycle.

Nora was relieved, Cevon was a little disappointed, although he didn’t share that with Nora, but the rest of us were just happy she was happy.

“Yes,” I say with a grim smile. “She’s definitely fertile. There’s a high chance she’s getting pregnant during this heat.”

Just because she’s fertile and not on birth control doesn’t mean that she’s going to get pregnant. But with two Alpha lions, a mythical griffin, two strong tigers, and a lone bear from what would be a royal line, if we still had those in the UK, and a fox in the mix, I doubt that she’s going to make it through.

Cevon inhales, and then he’s gone, racing up the stairs two footsteps at a time.

Fuck.

I need Griffin here, now, so that I’m not alone. He’s going to be the only one with a strong enough hold over his animal to not just rut into our very willing mate to breed her.

Fuck.

I close my eyes as Micah disappears, hot on Cevon’s tail, and I’m left with Voss.

“I can keep a hold of myself,” he says, and there’s a sort of gentleness to his words as he stands tall in front of me. I never once expected Devoss, the curly red head with a temper and psychoticness that rivals that of Cevon, to be the one by my side right now. I appreciate it, more than I can even verbalise, but it’s not how I thought this would go down. “Cevon’s going to struggle the most, but I don’t think any of you are going to keep a clear head.”

“He is,” I say, and don’t bother commenting on my own state.

Voss is not wrong. I wish I could say that I’d be fine, that I can make it through her heat without losing myself. But it’s not true. My lion is already fighting me, and it’s going to take a lot for me to keep my hold on him.

Every moan from Nora, every whimper and groan, my arousal increases, and my focus ebbs away.

“What do you need from me?” Voss asks, and I raise an eyebrow, not understanding the question. Voss is the last person I’d trust to run the pride, and that’s including Cevon and Micah. He’s just not personable enough, and I’m worried the power would go to his head. Even with him being the last man standing in a way. “The bear is already lost to the haze, and I doubt we’re getting him out of there until tomorrow at the earliest. What do you need done with the pride so that you can join in without worry?”

“Nothing,” I say, shaking my head gratefully. “Orson and I have everything set up. I’m hoping Mal got shit figured with—”

“He did, but I’ll check in on it before joining you,” Voss says with a nod. I nod back, surprised he’s this relaxed. “Go. Nora’s wolf is going to be needing you far sooner than she’ll need me. I’ll be back with the griffin soon.”

“She needs you, too.”

“I know,” he says with a smirk. His jade green eyes twinkle as he steps back from me. “But you’re her Alpha, and she’s going to be begging for a bond soon enough. None of us would take that from you, but if she’s begging, and you’re not there...”

He’s not wrong, and he knows it. As he leaves the house to go get Griffin, I quickly kick my shoes off, not bothering to put them away like I normally do, and jog up the stairs to join the others.

I know that once I enter Nora’s den, I won’t be leaving.
