“Okay, David, we will be there, and we’ll meet with your mate’s family,” Atticus says. “Is there anything else you’d like from me?”

“Um, no.”

Sorry, bro, my mate is a tad bit intense.

“Will you be okay chatting with your brother?” Atticus asks, and I nod. He kisses my forehead. “Okay, I’ll leave you two to chat. I’m going to start organising plans for this weekend.”

“Already?” I ask.

“I’ve had a few different plans in motion, little queen, and now that we’ve made our decision, I need to execute them,” Atticus says, and I smile. He kisses me again before moving me to the side. I watch in amusement as he quickly gathers the papers he had—the ones that were organised—and his laptop before darting off.

“You still there?” David asks.

I nod and grab the phone, taking it off speaker before putting it to my ear. “Yes. Sorry.”

“You don’t need to be sorry,” David says. “You’re right that this is awkward.”

“It’s not either of our faults, though” I say. “We didn’t do anything wrong.”

“I’m sorry,” David says. “I can only imagine how stressful this is for you.”

“No, I’m the one who is sorry.” I say, shaking my head, though he can’t see it. “Atticus did his best to try and support me, and that’s led to all of these problems for you. I’m sorry that you didn’t want a mating ceremony.” Internally, I even apologise for being so jealous over this.

I’ve been whining so badly about how my perfect little brother gets a ceremony that I’m never going to get—a ceremony that he doesn’t even want.

It really puts things into perspective.

“It’ll be nice to see you again,” David says before a teasing kind of tone appears. “How tall are you now?”

I narrow my eyes, not sure if he’s joking. “Five foot two.” Give or take an inch.

He bursts out laughing. “Growing up pretty tall, I see.”

“You’re the younger brother,” I say, and he snorts. Yeah, strong come back, Nora. “So, what are you doing with yourself?”

“Well, I’ve got no choice but to be a Beta for the pack.”

What the fuck? “Since when did we have Beta’s?” I ask with a scrunch of my nose. “And what do you mean by you’ve got no choice?”

“Since Kennedy took over,” David says with a small sigh, “Alpha, well, the old Alpha, realised that Kennedy was actually pretty useless and has pressured him into getting people who will actually run the pack for him.”

My eyebrows go so far into my hairline, I’m surprised I even have any.

“Why are you just getting your mate’s family out?” I ask, shaking my head as a deep overwhelming sadness fills me. I know none of this is my fault, I know that, but I’m David’s older sister, and he’s in a shitty situation because of what fate planned for me. It’s hard not to feel even the littlest bit responsible. “Why don’t you and Crystal leave, too?”

“It’s hard and complicated,” he says. “We’ll talk about when you get here.”

“That would be nice. So what are you doing with your life?” he asks.

“I’m a paralegal,” I say “I run a department at Atticus’ company.”

“Ahh, right,” he says, and whilst he sounds positive, I know that there’s a lot of judgement there.

“When I first left the pack, I was in this small town, and I just moved to a different one,” I say, bringing my legs up to my chest, wrapping my arms around them while still managing to balance the phone between my ear and shoulder.

“I met Atticus at that company that I was working with in the small branch, and he was a little bit obsessed, made me leave.”

“A little bit obsessed with his mate? I’m not surprised,” David says, “But a lion, though, I bet that’s cool.”
