“Nora, baby…”

I shake my head and give them a soft smile. I’m being ridiculous. I know I am.

Atticus comes down the stairs wearing a pair of formal trousers and a shirt. He doesn’t have a suit jacket, but that doesn’t make the outfit choice any less obscene.

He eyes the scene in front of him before giving me a small smile. “Are you ready to go, little queen?”

I nod, rather than saying no like I want to.

I hug Orson and Griffin, both of them silently reassuring me that this weekend will go quickly and everything will be fine.

I’m extremely glad that Malachi, Devoss, and Micah aren’t here to say another goodbye.

Griffin wasn’t meant to be here, and it’s killing me saying goodbye to him the most, since we’ve got the half-completed bond.

Once Atticus finishes giving Orson some last minute updates, we head out to the car. Our bags are already packed away, Orson having handled it.

“Kai says to make sure you drive safely,” Orson says, giving Atticus a pointed look from where he’s standing at my car door.

He does up my belt and then closes the door, continuing to glare at Atticus through my window.

My Alpha rolls his eyes and revs the car.

“Voss will be leaving in about eight hours. Stick to the plan—if you need him, reach out on your satellite phone. He’ll do the same. We know the signal isn’t the best there, so we don’t expect to hear from you properly until Monday when you’re on the way home,” Orson says, just breaking my heart that little bit more. “So, be safe until then.”

We nod, and Orson steps back so Atticus can pull away.

We’re driving for a few minutes when Atticus reaches over and squeezes my knee, drawing my attention to him.

“I’m sorry,” he says.

“Don’t be,” I reply with a small shrug. Unlike my other mates, I didn’t blame Atticus. It’s not his fault that we have different roles, and I know I’ll be expected to accompany him on trips in the future, with or without the others. “I think things will be easier once my bonds are completed.”

I hear the sharp inhale of his breath, and the smell of his surprise fills the car.

It’s not often that I talk about us bonding, mainly because I’m not yet ready for it, but every time I bring it up, it’s hard to control my wolf’s instincts.

We’ve been taking things very slow, but I know my heat is going to be coming on soon.

It’s something I’ve been worried about, and I know I need to make myself a doctor’s appointment to figure out when it’ll be happening.

But to do that, I need to talk to either Atticus or Orson about it. They’ll be able to help me find a GP surgery and make sure the doctor is briefed on what happened.

George might want to talk to my doctor, too.

But since I’m not looking forward to doing it, I have been putting it off.

“What’s that look for?” Atticus asks, his blonde brows pinched together. I sigh and let him know what I’ve been thinking about.

“Orson will no doubt already have a few different doctors lined up already for you to take your pick off,” Atticus says with a soft smile. “And we can get that appointment sorted as soon as we’re home. How are you feeling?”

I know he’s asking if any of the pre-heat signs have started, but they haven’t.

Heat comes twice a year in wolves who have met their mates. It’ll be once in the summer and once in the winter for me, based on my birthday, but my issues with my wolf might have messed that up.

“Fine,” I reply, and he nods thoughtfully. “I just know that now that me and my wolf are bonding, and we’re on a more regular shifting pattern, that things are eventually going to start back up again.”

I’ve never had a heat, since you don’t get those until your wolf matures at eighteen and your animal has picked a mate, but since I was fourteen, I’ve had the pre-heat sensations.
