“Then someone has been back there,” he says, sounding surprised. “The car was smashed to pieces. There was no scent of my sister, none of her things, nothing other than your suitcase, which was on the side of the road, with your clothes strewn about around the hunters.”

“When did you check it out?” I ask.

“We found you on Friday at around eight,” he says. “And I went out and located the car on Sunday—yesterday. So it had been there for about thirty-six hours I’m presuming.”

“Fuck!” I roar, slamming my fist into the wall to the side of David’s head. He doesn’t flinch, just meets my eyes, as I fucking lose it.

I roar and fume as I try to plead with my lion to calm his shit. He’s emotional, I get that, but we need to be logical about this. If we just go on a hunt now, we might miss something. We need all of the facts before we can act.

It’s Nora who will suffer otherwise.

“I’ve sent a group of enforcers back there to examine the scene,” Kennedy says. Anger appears in David’s eyes, but he doesn’t say anything to argue against his Alpha.

“He refused to send anyone yesterday?” I ask, and David gives the smallest of nods. “What about the bodies?”

“Bodies?” His eyes widen, and he shakes his head. “They were gone.”

Fuck.

“You sent enforcers back there today?” I ask, and David nods once more. “Take me to the area where I can set up my hub. I need to get in contact with my pride, and then locate my mate.”

David nods as two other men come into the room. I raise an eyebrow at David, and he subtly gestures to the one on the right. Okay, so I can trust him, but not the other.

“Who are you both?” I ask, happy that they both acknowledged me before their own Alpha. A quick glance at Kennedy shows he hasn’t even recognised the slight.

Pathetic.

“Gary,” the guy on the left says. Gary’s about thirty, maybe forty, with bleach blonde hair. He’s got an expensive watch on his right wrist which doesn’t match the faded clothing. His teeth are artificially white, and he just smells sour.

He’s a wolf who may have harmed Nora, so my disdain could be that, but I don’t get good vibes from this man. He’s a snake, and I doubt he’s a Beta of this pack because he wants to help his pack.

“My name is Arthur, Alpha Phoenix,” the guy on the right says with a nod, and, like David, I instantly trust this man. He’s got an aura of peace around him, an energy that just draws you in. He might be a wolf, but somewhere in his lineage there’s got to be some other kind of shifter. Maybe even a mythical.

He’s about my age and has midnight black hair. Like David, he’s got a strong build, and I wonder if these two men are friends. He’s respectful, and acknowledges his Alpha next.

“Perfect,” I say. “Lead the way to where we’re setting up.”

Kennedy doesn’t even attempt to take over, just allowing David to be the one to run the show. I’m grateful for that because my lion is out for blood, and since the people who have taken Nora aren’t on the table just yet, he’s willing to go for the first man to ever hurt her.

The less interaction I have with Kennedy, the better for both our sakes.

Within twenty minutes, David and Arthur have got a hub set up, arranged for one of the enforcers who went to the car wreck to come and talk with me, and Orson has just got on the video chat.

He’s currently in my office, the room a good comfort right now, even if I can see my scotch opened on the desk.

My surroundings are nowhere near as good as his though. We’re got a big open space with a bunch of tables, outdated computers, and a slight smell to the room. It’s uncomfortable, and I know I’m being snobby when I judge it.

I should be grateful for the help, and I am. It’s just rude seeing Orson sitting in my luxurious, ergonomic chair, when I’m sitting in a chair that all four legs can’t be on the ground at the same time.

“Okay, Voss is working his angles, and is still in the area. Reach out to him once we’re done, and see what he knows,” Orson says, going straight into update mode. “Kai is at the office working with anyone around the area. So far, we’ve not turned anything up. Micah’s doing his bit from the office, too, but there’s no digital footprint. He’s monitoring for a ransom, but we’re not hopeful. Griffin is fighting to come join you—”

“No,” I snap, shaking my head. “He does not leave the pride.”

Orson nods, cracking his knuckles. “I’ll make sure he understands that. I’ll see if Kai—”

“No,” I say, shaking my head again. “You both need to stay to protect the pride. I’m already out here, I’ll stay. Voss is here, too.”

He sighs, shaking his head now, giving me a pointed look. “Atticus, not only are you out there unprotected—” I snarl, and he sighs. “I know you’re powerful, but that doesn’t mean you’re invincible.”
