“No,” she says, her cheeks flushing just a bit.

“You have some explaining to do, Ms. Cole. What’s with the big neck?”

“It’s just something I like.”

“On everyone or certain necks in particular?”

“One in particular,” she says confidently. “I won’t accept being teased over it.”

Then she sticks her tongue out at me, making me burst out in another round of laughter. I hope I’m never unsurprised by her fun sense of humor.

“I won’t tease you. Alexander has an exceptional body. He’s easy to obsess over,” I tell her. “Have you been with multiple partners before?”

“No, have you?”

“Almost exclusively,” I admit. “I prefer it, it allows me to only participate to my own comfort level.”

“I can understand that. It’s nice you’ve found a way that works for you.”

“Do you have worries about it? About being with two people?”

She lays her head back and stares up at my ceiling before answering. “Maybe not worries, but concerns. Like I said before, I don’t want anyone of us to feel like they’re not as big a part of this relationship. If Zan’s on a road trip and we’re here together, is he going to feel a certain way? What if we don’t know until it happens and then it’s too late and someone is upset?”

“We’re adults, Willa. We’ll work through it.”

“I’ve known adults that fuck up in stupid ways and it causes more hurt than you can imagine. I’d rather avoid any and all of that, please and thank you.”

She means her sister and brother-in-law, I’m sure. Alexander has filled me in some on their relationship, enough to know they had a hard time for several years. One of the things he loves most about Willa is how supportive and protective she was when Isla was working through a surprise pregnancy amidst a tumultuous breakup. Loyalty means a great deal to us both, and Willa is that.

“Have some faith in us, beautiful,” I tell her just when our phones ping with notifications.

Alexander:

Done for the day. Heading over shortly,

want me to grab food?

“We’ve reached group text status,” Willa says. “This is all moving so fast.”

I sit up to see her face and be sure she isn’t being serious. She winks at me, setting me at ease.

“What sounds good?”

“I’m not picky unless it has mushrooms. Don’t feed me mushrooms, ever.”

“Noted. Thai food?”

“Mmm, yes please.”

Me:

Thai food would be great, thank you.

Alexander:

Got it. I’ll order a variety. No mushrooms.

Willa grins when she reads the text.
