Hayley opens her mouth, then closes. Leah is about to speak, but Chase curses, fixing Ethan with a suspicious look. “And, less important but still concerning to me, why the fuck this guy looks like he’s been hit by a train.”
His sharp eyes, pale grey and startling in their intensity, fix on Ethan, cataloguing his faded and hidden injuries.
Cooper steps forward, not liking the harsh tone he’s taking with the women, but Hayley shakes her head.
“Chase, stop it. You’re being paranoid. Stay for dinner, we’ll get you a room, and you can hang out for a while and see for yourself.”
When her brother looks at Cooper, then Rex, they both nod and school their features into something close to a welcoming expression.
“Absolutely, we’d love to have you stay with us.” Cooper’s words are genuine, while Rex merely nods, less enthusiastic about making nice with his new family.
“Fine. But I’m not staying here. I’ve got a place in town. And I’ll be sticking around until I know exactly what the hell is going on.”
Leah grins and rushes him, wrapping her arms around his waist and burying her face in his chest. “I missed you.”
The tough guy visibly softens, even though he pries her from himself and rolls his eyes. She links her arm through his and pulls him toward the back entrance, chattering happily while he continues to absorb every detail. Cooper and Rex move to Ethan’s side, watching with trepidation as Chase enters their packhouse, now doubt intent on uncovering the secrets they want to stay hidden.
“What the hell are we going to do about him?” Rex growls. “If we thought Leah was persistent, imagine what a pain in the ass this guy is going to be.”
Cooper groans, “Just when you think things are getting back to normal.”
Staring at Chase Walker, I ponder the other I sensed from him earlier. Nobody else has mentioned it, but they’re stronger wolves than me. I know they’ve picked up on it. Is it possible Chase is another Walker that has more to him than meets the eye?
Grey Ridge has its secrets to keep, but it’s quite possible that Chase has some that are even bigger.
He just doesn’t know it himself, yet.
