Malachi approached from behind and put an arm around each of them and squeezed. “How are my two favorite girls?”
“Better now that you’re here.” Cate smiled up at him.
“Gross. I’m going to go find Jared.” Keisha set her plate down, picked up her burger, and skipped off toward the group playing soccer.
Malachi took Cate’s plate from her hand and carried it over to the table. He sat beside her and waited until she took a giant bite of the juicy burger before speaking. “I know we haven’t been together long, but I was thinking maybe, that you might, possibly want to consider…”
She swallowed. “Spit it out already.”
“Marry me, Cate?” He held out a diamond ring.
She raised a brow. “I expected a jade ring.”
“Not funny. Will you marry me or not?”
“I will.” Applause broke out all around them. “Everyone here knew you were going to propose?”
“Yep.” Malachi lifted her from her seat, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her thoroughly. She could see them together in twenty-five years seated side by side like Malachi’s parents watching their own family grow. Her arms tightened around him, and she rested her head on his chest.
