He hugged her and she smiled up at him as she twisted around to face him.

“Not quite everything, I hope.”

She handed him the small package, watching his face as he opened it. Although she was almost positive he’d be delighted, her heart still skipped a beat as he pulled out the tiny pair of socks.

“I don’t understand. What are these for?”

“For a baby,” she whispered. “Our baby.”

His body went rigid beneath hers.

“Our baby? You mean…”

“Yes. We’re having a baby.” He still hadn’t moved and she gave him an anxious look. “You don’t mind, do you?”

“Mind?” His hand shook as he placed it over her stomach, not quite touching her. “A child…”

Something sparkled on his cheek, caught in the last rays of the setting sun.

“Yes. A child who will be very much loved, by both his parents. Or her parents.”

He dropped to his knees in front of her, leaning forward until his head rested in her lap. She stroked her fingers through the honey-colored locks as the vines intertwined with her fingers, waiting patiently until his shoulders stopped shuddering. He looked up at her at last, his eyes very bright.

“My Aurora. My dawn. Thank you. Thank you for loving me and awakening me into a new life.”

“I love you too, Marsh. You make me happier than I ever thought possible.”

He rose and lifted her into his arms as she squeaked in surprise.

“Where are we going?”

“To see if I can make you even happier.”

“I’m sure you can,” she whispered, and she was right.
