“Why? I’m not a lawyer or a detective or an FBI agent.”

“Who knows?” Zane sighed.

“It’s too much of a coincidence,” Seth said. “Same name. Residing in the same place. Same background story.”

Zane closed his eyes, still shaking his head. Eventually, he stopped and looked at Seth. “So what are we going to do about it?”

“I’ll go talk to her,” Seth said.

The head-shaking started all over again. “No. No, no, no.”

“She always has a reason for playing her games.”

“Maybe she’s just trying to get us to go see her, so that she can play more mind games and try to screw us over.”

Clary pursed her lips.

“Then what?” Seth snapped. “We just continue to let Pete harass Clary?”

Zane’s gaze flitted over to her.

“I can block his number.” She took out her phone. “I’ll do it now.”

Seth pressed her phone down. “And then what? He sent you over a hundred messages on Christmas Eve to get your attention. He has implied that he’s still watching you.” Seth shot a glare at Zane. “I’m not just going to sit back and wait for him to hurt Clary or do something stupid to—in his mind—protect her.”

“Then I’ll go talk to Holly,” she said.

Seth’s eyes widened. “No.”

Zane, however, remained quiet.

“No,” Seth repeated.

Zane rubbed a hand over his mouth. “Holly doesn’t know Clary. She wouldn’t be able to play her around the way she could play us.”

“We’re not kids anymore.”

“So you think you can’t be manipulated?” Zane ran his hand through his hair. “Like it or not, we have a history with her. She’s good at observing people, at knowing which buttons to push. It will take her more time to figure out Clary’s buttons than ours.”

Clary gave Seth’s hand a light squeeze.

“No.”

She looked over at Zane. “Can I have a moment with Seth?”

Zane gave her a thankful glance, then got up and left the study.

“Let me do this,” she said when the door to the study closed. She cupped a hand to his face. “I don’t want you or Zane to have to face her.”

“I’m not letting you see her.”

“Zane’s right.”

“I don’t care.”

She sighed softly. “I’m doing it.”

His eyes narrowed.
