“I can either do it with your support or without.”

“Clary, you don’t know Holly.”

“I know. But as you said, she always has a motive for her games. If we really want to end this, we need to know what that is. If we leave it alone, Holly might try something else. The next person may not be as passive as Pete. Pete’s persistent, but he—thus far—hasn’t been too aggressive. Holly clearly has other plans. She had Remo, and who knows whatever and whoever else.” Clary ran a hand down Seth’s arm. “Let’s go and see what she wants. If, by any chance, we figure out her motive, we can stop it. Otherwise, this might just get bigger and more people might get dragged in.”

Seth shook his head.

“Please, Seth. I want to do this,” she said. “I’ll have a short chat with her, just a few minutes. How bad could it be?”

“That just speaks to how much you don’t know about her.”

CHAPTER 16

“She’ll pretend to be sweet and nice,” Zane said. “You cannot buy into her act.”

“You cannot believe anything that comes out of her mouth,” Seth corrected.

“I won’t.”

Both Zane and Seth had already run through this while they were on the plane. They listed all the things she shouldn’t do. If she were to take everything into account, then she should simply walk in and be a block with no emotions or reactions.

“And remember, don’t give her too much information.” Zane walked alongside her. “Clary, do you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“I know you’ve dealt with abusers before, but Holly is different.”

“I get it.” She truly did.

To them, Holly was a monster who put them through horrible things.

“She’s never hurt me,” Clary said. “I’m not afraid of her.”

“You should be,” Zane said.

She sighed heavily. “I get it. I’ll go in, try to get her to talk without giving too many things away. I can’t trust anything she says. Just because she’s smiling, doesn’t mean she isn’t thinking of ways to hurt me.”

Seth sighed softly and gave her hand a squeeze. “We’ll be right outside.”

Clary shook her head. “No. I think you guys should wait out here.”

“No way,” Seth said.

“You’d come rushing into the room if Holly even raised her voice.”

Zane shook his head. “You’re not going in alone.” He folded his arms over his chest. “We’ll go in with you. We’ll wait outside her room.”

“Clary!”

Her head snapped to the side at the familiar voice. “Uncle David.” She laughed once and walked over, meeting him halfway.

“Why is your phone switched off?”

Clary took her phone out of her bag. “It must’ve died.” She dropped her phone back in place. “You came all the way here just because you couldn’t get a hold of me?”

“You asked me where Holly is right now, then you went MIA. And when I checked your location, I saw you were heading exactly where you shouldn’t.”

Her eyes widened. “You told Mr. E and Grandma Moretti?” She had contacted Uncle David instead of Mr. E because she didn’t want them to know.
