“Nine,” I said. “But he’s a freak athlete. You have to see him. It’s crazy. I can’t wait to get him on skates.”

They all looked at each other.

“Hey,” I said. “No silent conversations. There’s nothing to say. Got it? You all know everything. I’ve loved Sage since the first time I saw her. Okay? Simple as that.”

“I guess there’s nothing else to say about it,” Jago said. “See you guys out on the ice. Can’t wait to meet your wife, Henry.”

“She’s not my wife,” I said.

At least not yet.

You think I won’t make her my wife? Huh? I’ll go get a fucking diamond ring right now and marry her today.

No, I won’t do that.

You know why?

I would ask Travis for permission first.

That’s right.

I’d sit him down and tell him what his mother means to me and promise him I would care for her for the rest of my life. And that I would take care of him too.

“Snap out of it,” Atlas said to me. “He’s fucking with you. Don’t let it go to your head.”

The guys all left the locker room for the ice.

I texted Sage where to go and assured her she had clearance to show up.

That part made her tease me a little when I told her.

Oh, security clearance? Are you a hockey player or are you hiding aliens somewhere…?

I loved her humor and wit and everything about her… and, yeah, fine, the way the guys all looked at me and acted and talked, they were right. I was addicted to Sage and her life.

I quickly got changed, laced up my skates, and hit the ice.

I made a few fast laps around the rink to stretch my legs.

We then randomly set up some drills and just messed around. This was us on our own time, practicing together. Our commitment to the team and what we wanted to build for ourselves and for the fans.

Seb whistled and called out a play for him, Rome, and Joe to run.

To practice a two-on-one breakaway.

Jago prepped himself in net.

Seb started with the puck and quickly passed it to Rome.

Joe made an aggressive move toward Rome, then darted toward Seb.

Rome didn’t fall for a thing.

He kept the puck and had a shot on net but he didn’t take it.

Instead, Rome dumped the puck behind the net.

Jago took a big risk, left the net and moved around the back to retrieve the puck.
