I took a deep breath and reminded myself I was at a funeral.

Again, I looked at the casket.

In some way I almost felt Leon was laughing at me.

Him and that stupid rule of his that I wasn’t allowed near Sage.

Even now with him gone, there was someone in the way of me getting to Sage.

Wherever Leon was now, he had to face the truth of his life and his death…

… and he had to face that no matter what anyone - living or dead - thought about me… nobody could ever love Sage the way I did.

The words were short and poignant.

Not much said in the realm of truth about Leon. Meaning, if I had my chance to speak I would have talked about his stubbornness. His love for sports. His greater love for his granddaughter. Who is still off limits! I could paint the picture of the man we knew.

And when I thought about us, I looked around and saw just how many people were not there. I counted a grand total of twelve people, which included Sage, Travis, and the my love guy. Oh, I guess if you included me, I was lucky number thirteen.

How about that?

Even something trivial like that seemed to matter in its own way.

After the priest spoke his final words, offering Leon peace in the afterlife, everyone was given their chance to toss a rose or some dirt down onto the casket as it was lowered into the ground.

This macabre routine stuff irked as much as the cemetery itself did.

My eyes stayed glued to Sage. To Travis.

Everyone waited for them to make the first move.

Sage stood up and Travis went with her. They stepped forward and stood next to Leon’s casket. Poor Travis looked a mix of sad and scared.

Sage leaned down a little and spoke to Travis.

Travis then threw some dirt and ran back to his seat, wiping his hands on his pants, fighting back to the urge to cry.

When my love guy reached for Travis, he didn’t want anything to do with it.

Travis turned away.

So my love guy jumped up to his feet, clearly annoyed by the rejection from Sage’s son and he walked right up to Sage, standing with her during such an important moment.

I felt that urge again.

The one that told me to step in.

Body language told the story voices didn’t.

I had no idea what the relationship was between these two, but she wanted this moment to herself.

Something was said to my love guy and he not only backed off from Sage, he actually walked away.

I saw my chance to casually stroll over, find him and smash his head against a tree.

Henry.

I gritted my teeth.
