My nipples tightened, hardening to peaks that I was positive were pointing straight through my bra.

I’d lost control of my body.

It was as if he held a string that dictated my reactions and was pulling on it.

With every ounce of his strength.

I had to force my hands to stay at my sides and stop my body from leaning into his.

“Us.” His free hand lifted, his palm holding the base of my neck, tilting my face up, his mouth rising so that it didn’t touch mine. “The chemistry that everyone says we have.” His stare traced my eyes, nose, down to my lips, where his thumb moved across my pout. Back and forth. A speed so slow, it was making me yearn for more pressure. “Is that what this is?”

He hadn’t earned this.

He hadn’t even begun to grovel his way out of the hole he’d dug himself into.

But, my God, there was no way I could demand that now.

I was . . . lost.

“Yes. I feel it too.” My voice wasn’t any louder than a whisper.

“I can see how turned on you are.” His teeth bared. “I can fucking feel it.”

“Then what’s stopping you from kissing me?”

His eyes closed, and his lips briefly grazed mine, like the passing of a windshield wiper, before he pressed our foreheads together. “Laura. That’s who’s stopping me.”

My body was beating in a way that made it hard to breathe and impossible to process what he was saying. The only thing I could get out was, “What?”

His face pulled away, his hand moving to my chin, holding it while he replied, “You’ll find out why tomorrow.” He separated our bodies and opened the door and began to walk through it.

I grabbed the handle, keeping the door ajar while I watched him, dumbfounded, confused as to what had just happened, what he’d even said, and what this all meant. “Grayson?”

He didn’t turn around. He didn’t even look over his shoulder.

He just said, “I’ll see you in the morning, Jovana,” and it was loud enough for me to hear.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Grayson

“I called you in today to give you a proposition,” Laura said, keeping her eyes focused solely on Jovana, who had looked like a deer in headlights since she’d arrived, especially when she was signing the NDA. “One that you’re probably going to find rather unorthodox.” Laura had her hands on top of a folder containing the contract, where every detail of our potential arrangement had been laid out.

My legal team had worked through the night to make sure every i was dotted, every t was crossed, that their verbiage outlined the duties the other party—whether it be Jovana or someone else—and I were responsible for.

And it set a term.

One year.

That was my sentence.

Admittedly, as I stared at Jovana from the head of Laura’s oval table, it wasn’t a bad sight to have to look at for the next twelve months.

Every time I saw her, she was even more gorgeous, and I found it impossible to pull my stare away from her.

But that didn’t mean I was pleased with this proposition.

That I hadn’t stayed up all night, contemplating a way out of it.
