“We shouldn’t be doing this,” I blurted out. “It’s wrong.”

“Hmm. I disagree.”

“We’re lying to everyone. We’re lying to Tavy. I’m lying to Tavy.”

“What happened tonight?”

“She saw your toothbrush in my bathroom and she asked me if I was dating someone. I said no.” I rubbed my forehead. “What are we doing, Smoke?”

“Having a good time.”

“Right. A good time. I’m lying to my best friend about who I’m sleeping with. And for what? This isn’t a serious relationship.”

“If it was serious, would you tell her then?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“What did you mean then?”

“I mean it doesn’t matter if it’s serious or casual. The fact is, we shouldn’t be doing what we’re doing.”

“Because of Tavy.”

“Yes.”

“You’re choosing your friendship instead of whatever this is between us.”

“Whatever this is? Come on, Smoke. We’re just fooling around.”

“Are we?”

My lungs seized and suddenly I couldn’t breathe easily.

“Yes,” I wheezed out. “We’re just fooling around.”

“I miss you when I’m not with you,” he said. “And I know you miss me too.”

“Smoke, don’t.”

“Don’t what? Don’t tell you what we both know is true? If this was just fucking, would we talk the way we do? Laugh the way we do?”

“I just got out of a serious relationship.”

“So?”

“So, I’m not emotionally ready to fall for someone else.”

“Doesn’t mean it’s gonna stop you, cupcake.” His voice was gentle, like he was talking to a spooked horse. “I’ve been around long enough, dated my fair share of women. I’ve never felt this way about anyone except you.”

“I’m not ready for this.”

My legs gave out and I collapsed onto the bed. I hadn’t bothered turning on the light, so I sat in darkness.

“I think you’re using Tavy as a convenient excuse not to admit how you really feel.”

“And I think you don’t care enough about her feelings.”

“You don’t think I care about her feelings?” he demanded. “Because I won’t tell my adult daughter what I’m doing in my private life?”
