The few other customers looked in the direction of our table.

“Tavy,” I hissed.

“Sorry,” she muttered. “But are you?”

I paused and then shook my head. “I’m not. But I was.”

She looked at me in confusion. “I don’t understand.”

“I was pregnant,” I said slowly. “But I had a miscarriage. It wasn’t Smoke’s, Tavy.”

I gave her a moment to process what I’d said, and when it registered, her eyes widened. “You mean, you were pregnant with Knox’s…”

I nodded.

“Oh. Oh, wow.” She swallowed. “Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant? Did you think I’d be upset because it was Knox’s?”

“I didn’t know I was pregnant.”

“What happened? How did you miscarry?”

“It was probably the punch to the stomach that did it,” I said, wincing as I remembered the pain, the agony, the terror of Knox brutalizing me.

“Dad told me what happened,” she said gently. “About Knox trying to…”

“Yeah.” I swallowed and took a deep breath. “Thank God for Smoke.”

“Thank God.”

“He knows about the miscarriage, Tavy. And he—if things had been different and Knox had never come back, he says he would’ve stayed with me and the baby.”

“He said that to you?” Tavy asked, her eyes glistening with tears.

“Yeah.” I swallowed.

“Damn. No wonder you’re in love with him.”

I let out a startled laugh. “Yeah, no wonder. Look, I don’t know when he’s going to propose or when we’re getting married, but when I do, you’ll be the first one I call.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

“What do your parents think of all this?” Tavy asked.

“Mom knew something was going on,” I said. “I called her, trying to talk around the fact that I was seeing someone new so soon after ending my engagement, but she was onto me from the beginning. She doesn’t care about our age difference. Dad and my brothers on the other hand…”

I quickly told her the story of that morning, waking up to my brothers standing over us and trying to intimidate Smoke.

Tavy laughed so hard tears streamed from her eyes. “If they had any idea how much of a bad ass my dad is, they wouldn’t have even tried that shit.”

“Are you telling me I fell in love with a bad boy?”

“A bad boy biker,” she agreed. “Although, you might reform him.”

“God, I hope not. I love him just the way he is.”

“Aww, that’s sweet. Nauseatingly sweet, actually.” She took my hand and gave it a squeeze. “But you guys deserve your happily ever after.”
