“Well, you look hot as hell, and those tits are going to make you a hit with the old timers at the counter, which means big tips. I’m pretty sure that’s why Granny makes us wear these dresses in the first place. I mean, it’s kind of gross when you think about it, but at the same time, why not work with what your mama gave ya, you know?” She shimmies back and forth, making her boobs jiggle, and I can’t help but laugh as she wags her eyebrows.

We turn when we hear a whistle followed by, “Looking good, V,” from a younger guy wearing a hair net and stained white apron.

“Ew, Trent. Stop looking at my tits, or I’m going to tell your brother you were perving on his wife.”

Trent pretends to zip his mouth closed and books it back to the kitchen, looking a little frightened.

“Who’s that?” I ask her.

“That, my darling Dolly, is my husband’s kid brother. Way too young to be looking at grown women’s tits, but harmless, unlike that asshole Matt. He won’t touch you if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“Got it,” I reply, feeling relieved there won’t be another Matt situation. I don’t think I could handle another creepy co-worker, and I’d hate to have to quit.

I check myself out in the little mirror next to the lockers, smoothing out my uniform and making sure my ponytail is still neat. “You sure this isn’t too much?” I point at my chest and the amount of cleavage on display.

“Nope. Perfect amount, I’d say. Come on.” Violet grabs my hand again, leading me out of the kitchen. “First things first, I’ll show you how to make the coffee, which those guys practically live on, and then I’ll show you how to work the register.”

When we pop back to the front, Violet loudly introduces me. “Hey, y’all! This here is Dolly, our new waitress.”

I give a little awkward wave to the guys sitting at the counter. Wyatt does a double take, and ooh boy, he is not happy about my missing hoodie.

Tough shit, I think, summoning my inner Violet.

“Well, hey there, Miss Dolly. Welcome.” An older gentleman at the bar waves back.

Another one pipes up, “Hey, good lookin’, whatcha cookin’?” A few of the guys chuckle at the joke, and I cut my eyes to Wyatt, grinning at the glare he shoots at the jokester, which only makes them laugh louder.

“Damn, if only I were twenty years younger, Miss Dolly, I’d take you out for an ice cream date.”

“More like fifty years!” The jokester pokes fun at the third guy, slapping him on the back, earning him another round of laughs.

Wyatt is up and out of his seat, but before he can take a step, one of them calls out, “Sit down, Wyatt. We know she’s your woman. Hell, the whole town knows by now. We’re just giving you a hard time, is all, and ain’t nothing but a few jokes. Besides, your Pops would have been right here messing with you, too, God rest his soul.”

There’s a round of Amens, and Wyatt looks somewhat appeased, though he doesn’t relax until they all go back to their quiet conversations and leave me be.

The diner is small, but there’s a steady stream of customers inhaling their pancakes and coffee throughout the evening, either coming in after their long shift at work or trying to wake themselves up before heading to one.

I’m sweating, running around as I try to keep up with Violet and memorize everything she’s teaching me. By the end of my shift, I’d dropped and shattered three plates, made and served an ungodly amount of coffee, and spilled a dark soda all over my new shoes.

I’m dead on my feet, but Violet was right about the tips. My eyes bulge at the cash she hands me. It’s more than I’ve ever earned, and it’s all mine. And damn, it feels good.

Harold meets me in the back and pats my shoulder for a quick second before moving away. “You did good, kid. Think you want to stick around and let me put you on the schedule?”

“Yeah, that would be great. Thanks so much for hiring me and for…taking care of Matt.”

“Of course. My only regret is I didn’t know what was going on sooner, or else I would have taken care of him a long time ago. I hate what he did to you and my F—I mean Faye.”

“Your Faye?” I grin as his face heats up.

“Faye, just Faye,” he says, correcting himself and clearing his throat. Well, uh, I’ll send you a text with this week’s schedule. Ok, bye now, Dolly.” He hightails it out of the back and into his office just as Wyatt stomps in, crowding me against the lockers.

“Babygirl…” He steadies my hips with his hands and drops his forehead down to mine.

“Hey, Daddy. Fancy seeing you here.” He’s got his grumpy face on, but it fades when I tip my head back and give him a quick kiss on the lips. His breath fans my face as he exhales and relaxes.

“Six hours was way too long to go without touching you. I wanted to smack every single guy who got a look at your gorgeous tits.”

“Yeah, I know. But it’s not them I’m going home with tonight. It’s you, Daddy. And I’m proud of you.”
