Pulling on a bikini and an oversized dress, I made my way to breakfast by the pool, my mood as bitter as the orange juice I treated myself to.

Max followed me like a shadow, keeping his distance for my comfort.

How could it be so damn easy to be with him sometimes until something flips and everything changes, making it almost painful to be in his presence?

Fuck it. I’m on vacation and I’m going to take advantage of my time here.

We were staying at a freaking ten-star hotel with a gorgeous view and a massive pool. Tall palm trees provided some much-needed reprieve from the scorching sun, while comfortable sunbeds invited every guest for a relaxing break. Waiters walked around with colored drinks decorated with funky straws and colorful hats.

What else could I ask for on a fake honeymoon?

For it not to be fake.

I chose a sunbed in the least populated area, making myself comfortable and trying as hard as I could to relax. My mind had wandered into dangerous thoughts behind the privacy of my sunglasses and closed eyes, and before he could speak, I noticed the shadow he cast over me.

A smile threatened to spread my lips, but I managed to keep it at bay as I sat up and pulled down my glasses before looking at him. My chest deflated once I took in the image before me.

There was a tall, muscled guy with sandy brown hair, showing off his perfect abs and pecs, standing right in front of me.

Yummy? For sure, but he was not my dearest husband, and that was enough to tip my mood from barely keeping it together to overly annoyed.

“Is this spot taken?” The man seductively asked, pointing to the sunbed to my right with a bright white smile on his face.

There were plenty of other available spots scattered all around the pool, but somehow, this specific one was dear to his heart. “This one just seems to be in the perfect place, with the perfect company.”

“It’s taken.” The growl that sliced through his seductive flare had a shiver running down my spine and a smirk growing across my face as the sight of a tall and seething Matt appeared in front of me. His eyes were set on the man as if they were weapons, sharp slits that threw daggers at the poor stranger. “It's taken by her husband. And if you want to live to rub more paraffin into that yellow hair of yours, I’d suggest you leave and don’t fucking talk to the lady again.”

That last statement was enough to have the stranger turn around and leave without a fight. Mafioso Matt was as dire as a breath of death from the reaper himself.

“The poor guy was just looking for company.” I couldn’t control the urge to twist that dagger further for my personal entertainment, but Matt didn’t reply to my provocation.

“You won’t be coming back here alone.” He warned instead, in a menacing, low voice, as he placed his stuff on the sunbed beside mine.

“I wasn’t alone. Max is here.”

“I’ll deal with him later.”

“Don’t you dare. He didn’t do anything wrong.”

“He was supposed to keep an eye on you.”

“And he did. The speedos that man was wearing left no space for concealed weapons. I was perfectly safe.”

He grunted and turned his back towards me while I fought the urge to control the smile that his jealousy brought to my face.

A loud splash broke my concentration as I watched Matt swim all the way to the other side of the pool before returning and pulling himself out of the water with ease.

I was frozen, admiring his bulging pecs covered in ink and perfect abs. He has those sexy dips in his hips that make smart girls like me turn stupid.

“Had a good stare?” I heard him say as he approached while I tried hard not to blush.

“Nope,” I replied before turning around, lying on my stomach, and purposely exposing my thong bikini bottoms to him.

“We might need to get you new swimwear,” he grunted, his eyes roaming over me.

“I kind of like these.”

“You and every guy around this fucking pool.”
