“Victor, come on!” He’d caught me off guard with that insinuation. I didn’t quite know how to respond without being disrespectful.

“What? You’re distracting to me, too.” He flashed me one of those impossibly attractive smiles. Instead of taking the compliment, the first thing that came to mind was that that smile fell short in comparison to Matt’s. In beauty and in what it did to me.

“Training session is finished.” A deep growl cut through the air from behind me. My skin immediately erupted into a million goosebumps as the baseline of that voice drove through me, making me shiver in a strange delight. “Francesca, a moment with Victor, please.”

Dark. Low. Grunted. His voice had a distinctive tone of murder today. And fuck, did it do all the wrong things to me. I fought the fog that his presence brought, reminding myself that we were at war with each other and I had yet to have a reason to brandish a white flag.

Not even a “Hello, how are you doing?” or “How’s my wife?” or even “I’m sorry for being a dick.” Nothing.

If he was going to pretend I meant nothing, I wasn’t going to stick around waiting. I picked up my towel, not bothering to even turn around, and darted straight to the shower.

Stupid, stupid girl.

Matt

“What the fuck are you doing?” I asked Victor, trying to hold my composure and reel in my anger.

“Training your lady friend.” He quickly replied, his head twisting towards the door Francesca had disappeared through. “She’s feisty. I like her. Not to mention, Dios mio. What an ass!”

Victor had a large smile on his face as if he was picturing it right now, right here in front of me. I had made a huge fucking mistake, but still, I couldn’t hold the anger from flowing straight out of my body.

Upon his remark, my hand flew from inside my pocket, holding his neck and pushing him until his back slammed against the wall, my grip deadly from the lack of clarity.

“Do you wanna die today?”

“What the fuck, man?” He tried to struggle out of my grasp. He may be all muscle, but that couldn’t beat the thirst for blood driving me right now.

“She’s my wife, so get your dick back into your pants, or I’ll chop it off and feed it to you,” I grunted, not leaving an ounce of menace from drilling into those words. From the color that had drained from his face, he’d gotten the fucking memo.

“How the hell was I supposed to know? You didn’t say anything of the sort.” He answered after I finally loosened the grip and turned away. “I didn’t do anything besides look.”

“That’s bad enough already.”

“You could have given me a heads up.”

“I was busy. I never thought you would get all worked up.”

“Are your fucking eyeballs working at all? Who on earth wouldn’t get all worked up?”

I looked at him again with a death glare in my eyes, warning him to be very careful with his next words. He was already pushing a very thin limit here.

“Oh, you’ve got it bad!”

“And you are fired.” I leisurely said, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere.

“What? Come on!”

Victor was right. I did have it bad. And I was trying to deal with it the best way I could.

“You’re fired from training her. I’ll be stepping in. You can keep the rest of your assignments. But only because you saved my ass before. We’re even now.”

Victor exhaled in relief. “Vale.”

We were friends, and deep down, I knew he didn’t mean anything by what he said, especially after knowing that Francesca was mine. He didn’t have a death wish that I knew of, and the line of girls cracking their legs open at his passage was long and persistent. He didn’t give a damn, though. I knew about his fixation with my sister, even though he’d swear over and over it was nothing. I knew better.

“Keep your hands and eyes to yourself, and we’ll be fine.” I looked at the Patek Philippe on my wrist, trying to reel in the anger coursing through me. There was no way I’d manage to put on my placid mask before Francesca got out of the changing room. I couldn’t deal with her right now. “I’m late.” I lied. “Max will take Francesca home as usual. Tell him I had a meeting at Dea Tacita.”

“Sure thing, Jefe,” Victor replied, hiding his knowing grin behind a tight nod.
